  1. No word yet, incredibly frustrating.

My employer is offering a supervisory position as a case manager and I think it will be great experience, but I can't make any decisions until these schools get back to me!

I don't want to pass this opportunity to move up if I don't get in anywhere, so I emailed Duan about my situation. Hopefully that will prompt an official statement.

  2. CSULB is doing the most of all the SoCal social work programs, and we'll all be doing field placements together. ANy news from the other programs or your not interested?

I'm not sure tbh. I'm positive fullerton's letter of declination is on it's way too, not sure what's taking them so long. CSUDH is the only one left and though LB has always been my top choice, if DH accepts me, I don't think I would turn them down.  However, if I don't get into any schools this year, I will definitely re-apply.

  3. SaidypooMSW--- If you need any help with your resume/personal statement I can help you with that.. The msw program at csulb is very competative so you need to have a very strong personal statement/reference letters/work experience... Make sure to incorporate social justice/oppression in your personal statement.. They want to see that.. you can also talk about how you have taken notice of the need for more culturally competent social workers and tie it with your work experience... & lastly if you have a below 3.0 gpa do not mention it in your statememt unless you took classes after graduation to boost your gpa, but instead talk about how you mature over the years...

Thank you! That would be great! I would appreciate any help and advice anyone has. I PM'd you btw.

  4. Well I hope they don't think this is gunna stop me Lol. I can only go up from here. I'm young, smart and only have experience to gain. Best of luck to all of you.

I'm going to apply in October. Maybe applying early will do the trick.

  5. Duan told me that I would hear by June 1. This was 2 weeks ago. Guess what it's June 1st and no news. Even the process to become a US citizen doesn't take this long from start to finish! I know because I help people through that process for work.

I hear ya. Personally, I would've liked my rejection letter weeks ago. Especially if they knew I had slim to no chance..why drag it out?

  6. I guess since there's no thread for csudh, I figured I'd start one.

    Any updates?

CSUDH is notorious for taking forever to send out notices. Like, seriously forever. Longer than LB.

I was told that they're still reviewing applications and that they would continue to do so until both cohorts were filled.

They told me they'd hope to have my decision by mid to the end of June. I applied to CMH and right now it's my second choice next to LB.

  7. Mine was waiting for me in my inbox when I woke up this morning. I'm ok with it. Everything happens for a reason. I guess I was meant to go to USC. I had started their program last fall and took a leave. I already told them I would be returning a few weeks ago. At least the wait is over now.

I'm so sorry :( I truly wish you all the best. I know that this whole process will make you an even better social worker.

  8. Hello,

I don't remember if I included the 3-year option as a secondary choice (2-year is my first). As I was just put into pending status, I'm a bit anxious and want to take any option available to attend since CSULB is my top choice.

I was thinking about e-mailing CHHS-SW to ask about it but wanted to consult you lovely folks about it first. What do you think?

Would it seem clumsy or selfish of me to want to make a change to my application? Would an email like this be annoying and desperate?

Would it somehow benefit me by showing my interest in the program?

I know that I am totally overthinking things.........

    THANKS!

I would go for it. you have nothing to lose at this point. They can't penalize us for advocating for ourselves Lol that would be against our code of ethics.

  9. Temple asks for an explanation though.

I was disciplined for acting manic, but the bipolar disorder is now under control thru meds and psychotherapy.

I PM you. Search around this site for forums speaking specifically about the drawbacks of mentioning mental health issues. I hope they help.

  10. Will the fact that I had disciplinary issues in law school impact my MSW application? I want to apply to Penn, Temple, and West Chester.

I have a lot of experience, legal and otherwise, assisting underserved populations (immigrants, domestic violence/sexual assault survivors, ex-offenders, etc.)

if there is any way that that information is available for the program to see, like if it's in your transcript, then your best bet would be to own up to it, acknowledge it and state how it will be different this time. If not, and it didn't affect your own personal criminal record (I don't know what type of disciplinary actions were taken here, no offense),then there's no need to mention it and raise potential red flags.

  11. I am a prospective MSW candidate. I have a strong undergraduate record (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) but a poor law school GPA (3.006). What are my chances?

    I agree. ^^

I think you have a really good chance. My best friend switched from law school to child development and she showcased why she felt she could make a bigger impact with a master's in child development that she could ever in law.

Programs are gunna focus on your undergradate work more than what came after, and still you're law gpa isn't terribly low. You meet the minimum. I think paired well with a meaningful statement if purpose, experience and LORs you should be fine. There are MANY professionals who switch over to social work, that alone speaks volumes.
