  4. Write a brief statement (500 words/3500 characters or less including punctuation, but not spaces) describing your reason(s) for pursuing graduate or postbaccalaureate study. Include any additional information concerning your preparation that is pertinent to the objective specified. "Wherever I go whatever I do I won’t forget what I've been through, I fought the fight I passed the test from this day on I'll do my best, to give a little back for all that I've received." My name is ______ ________ ______; I was born and raised in Boyle Heights. I am an only child who was raised all her life by a single immigrant mother. Seeing how much my mother struggled to give me a better life has encouraged me to work with underprivileged youth as well as their family, who have behavior, emotional, and any other physical, mental or social challenges. My desire for this profession springs from the troubles of my childhood, where I came from, and the past experiences that I have had. Growing up was a challenge that was not easy. I went through a lot in a very short period of time. In my youth I was abused physically, mentally, and emotionally. Now that I was older and in high school I was tormented with all that I had been through and continued to go through. I was able to survive my high school years with the aid of my counselor, Ms. Weiss. Ms. Weiss realized that I was going through some difficult times and she offered her help. At first I was a bit hesitant because it was something new, nobody had taken the time to offer help and advice before. She is one of the main reasons I am now seeking a masters in social work. I want to help and empower others to be a positive change in their own lives. I would like to be the person who helps them find their inner strength and reach their true potential. I have always had an interest in social justice, equality, and poverty. I have been forced to stand up for myself all my life, and I am aware that there is not a lot of equal social justice, equality but there is a great amount of poverty and discrimination. This needs to change, and I want to be a part of this change. Multiculturalism, privilege and oppression are very powerful. In order for communities to get better equality such as the one I grew up in, we need people who care and dare to make changes. Full membership, participation, and dedication are needed in order to succeed. I have learned from my missteps and challenges that have come my way and they have made me a stronger and better person. I feel the need of giving back to my community, and becoming an advocate of social change while building myself as a professional. My goal in life is to empower those in need, point them in the right direction through resources and advocacy, and help them help themselves. Being able to do that on a daily basis, and calling it my career would be my greatest accomplishment. Thank you for your time and consideration.
