Well... So far one person that received the first budget email but not the second in the fellows group got the award. Make me happy (a tiny bit) since I only received the first email as a scholar...

I was stressing out crazy about that as I didn't have a second email and I was 10K over budget (but that's expected as I am doing this for my dissertation research).

I got it. As long as you are clear about getting a government job and are staying abroad for an extended period of time, you will be good

Is this for the south Asian flagship program? Or a different one? I didn't get that email.

    AFLI = African Flagship.

It seems like those who applied for fellowships are getting more involvement with budget emails. We learn next week (yikes),  best of luck to you all!!!

I'm applying for a fellowship and only have received the initial budget email so I don't know where I stand right now. My budget was pretty detailed so IDK but I was also significantly over budget too.

My friend who is applying for one in Eastern Europe also hasn't gotten a second budget email so IDK what is going on.

  3. Ah... I got an email a week ago about my health insurance for AFLI but there was no mention of possible budget changes. They didn't give me a response either.

They also didn't specify that the emails were being sent to all. Their wording was "if you are awarded, we want to make sure you will have insurance" etc...

  4. Not to be a downer but if you are at all considering to get a job in the American market, it would be extremely difficult to get a placement with theory as your first field. Barely any jobs searches available for those specialists.

Just to put this into consideration - a lot of theorists wish they knew this when they started.

  5. I sent one of my professors a long email after I found out that I got a major external fellowship. He replied back three weeks later with the same line that you mentioned, nothing less and nothing more.

Don't take it too personal. Just send an email once a year to let them know how you are academically progressing and ask them about their research. If you are ever in town, drop in their office. Just keep in touch occasionally.

  6. I would only consider it if your tasks were very clearly outlined in a contract. ie: walk dog 3 times a week, one hour each walk. Wash dishes twice a day, 5 days a week. Vacuum entire house every Saturday morning. I would not agree to babysit because if the parents return home late it isn't ethical to leave them home alone and you are not likely to be compensated for extra time spent baby sitting.

There should also be a clause that if any changes need to be made, both parties need to agree, otherwise the contract is null and void. I'd also add a clause stating that if both parties do not agree to making changes and one or both parties no longer wishes to continue with the original agreement (making the contract  null and void), the original terms and conditions of the contract will continue for maximum period of amount of time (perhaps 2 or 4 weeks) to give yourself time to find a new place to live. You should also have a clause that states that any party can withdraw at any time for any reason if someone no longer wishes to part take in this arrangement providing a certain amount of notice is given (perhaps 2 or 4 weeks).

I would also have a clause stating that you can install a lock on your bedroom door and not give the family a key to the door to ensure your privacy. Furthermore, I would also have this document signed in the presence of a witness or notary.

if you do plan to do this, make sure you schedule in weekends that you would have a major paper due, comp exams, conference weekends, etc.

  7. those families are simply looking for "grad students" because they tend to have a more open schedule (in correlation with class time), more educated, older, more responsible.  but that does not mean that they would understand your struggles as a PhD student. that you don't have much time available...

it's just a type of job with very little defined boundaries. maybe if there was a clear understanding what the chores would entail and how often you would be expected to do them with some off days in between, it could work but i personally wouldn't do it. i was considering doing such a thing but like, i wouldn't want to be in the middle of someone's family issues and be working on a PhD.

the thing is... in a situation like this, you will limit yourself only to your living areas and the kitchen (only to cook). do you really want to be in a dorm type of situation except you have an entire family breathing down your neck? also, kids can be cute but annoying... even on off days they might not understand your avoidance to play.

  8. I've been known to put icing on bacon...ultimate salty/sweet combination.

this is actually very combo... saw bacon cupcakes the other day.

i like honey mustard on everything... honey mustard in my pasta, mashed potatoes, sandwiches, veggies, salad, RICE...

when i lived overseas, i bought three bottles of honey mustard with me so i would have it.

  9. Any major fellowship that you receive, you are supposed to list on your CV with the award amounts to demonstrate that you can secure a large amount of funding for you research, even if you decline the award.

A fellowship awarded by a school does not count.

Even fellowships of lesser prestige or lesser amounts should be listed. It will be in your favor when you are reviewed by hiring committees.

Now I disagree with people listing the honorable mention/alternate status. It just means that you sent a competitive application in comparison to other applicants but it only emphasizes on your CV that you applied for a grant which you did not receive. It's better to not mention it at all because in that instance, you were only second best (no offense but it is the truth and I have received alternate status once)... Nothing is truly "impressive" of getting an honorable mention - it's not something you would put in a Facebook status for instance because you were probably upset that you didn't get the actual award. To me, I personally see it as CV padding as well as its the foundation's way of encouraging those applicants to re-apply for the next cycle (which by all means DO SO, a friend of mine received honorable mention one year and received it the next so good things can happen!)

  10. Mocking- I did this and everything was fine. My advisor was the one who recommended to the CC so they were on board. Also, I was TAing three labs that semester too. But then again the busier I am the better I do in everything. If I'm not busy I just push things off to the last night but when I'm super busy, I must stick to my schedule to a T. So I think this is up to the individual and only you know how you operate. And to carry this on I taught at the CC all four years I'm here and the CC even let me teach the classes online when I was out of the country doing my research for a semester. And I am graduating in two weeks and finished in four years. So if you want to do it do it if not don't do it

that's how i feel... i like "not having time" available to procrastinate.

anyway, i decided to take everyone's advice... i decided the first semester, no... probably not even the first year but if i still want to do it in my second, my course load will probably be lower (nine credit hours in discipline, and additional undergraduate 5 credit lab for a language class for both semester, so it probably wouldn't have been the smartest thing).

  11. Sorry I didn't clarify... the mentor is not my current advisor... I was referring to my advisor from my master's.

I agree with your opinions... it's just that these graduate stipends are so low and I wish I had a way to earn some extra income for myself. I don't want to take out loans.

  12. Hey guys, I'm not a 2014 applicant, but I plan to apply for the next round. do any of you know where I could find some sample essays?

I'm planning to also apply for next year but I feel that for this specific fellowship, sample essays won't help. It seems like they are looking for people who can describe their immigrant experience as well as possible and directly correlate it to their drive and success.
