Yes, for IDS, you do have to take 4 extra courses..........1 in sociology/ anthropology, 1 in geography, 1 in economics and 1 in political science. The course requirements are actually listed on the graduate calendar 2012- 2013...here you go: http://www.uoguelph.ca/registrar/calendars/graduate/current/pdffiles/calendar.pdf It also lists requirements for our program as well. And you are right about the international part.........that is exactly why I wanted to take the collaborative program. I am still debating whether I want to the thesis option or the major paper option, have you decided yet? Hey! O wow! I didn't expect many people to be in this program. I guess I'll be seeing you around Well I wanted to study environmental development and then eventually go into consulting and this program will allow me to do that. I have registered for classes, but some of the classes I wanted to take requires an "instructors signature"....so I don't know how that works. I haven't heard anything back from my temporary advisor yet either, in terms of course selection. How about you? Did you register? Are you doing the collaborative International Development Studies program as well?

Anyone headed for Guelph this fall?

Hey guys, I have been accepted into a masters program, for which I am really excited. However, I found out about this diploma program at a local college, it has coop as well. It is related to my masters program and I think the MSc degree+ diploma+ coop work experience will help me in my intended career. Do you think I should pursue the diploma program and grad school at the same time? I was looking at my first semester schedule for grad school and I have Tuesdays and Fridays off, so maybe I can manage to take classes at the local college? Any suggestions would help.

Hey guys, Alright, so I am kind of in a dilemma. I was recently accepted to a program, I accepted their offer. I want to focus on alternative energy sources, this topic will draw upon more scientific principles than the social sciences. However, the program to which I am accepted into focuses on improving the environment mainly from the perspective of social sciences. For instance, instead of researching alternative energy sources, you would be researching how these alternative sources can have a positive impact on a community. I was recently on the university's website looking at programs under environmental sciences, and I came across the MES (Masters on Environmental Science) program which is for those without a science background but want to enter the field. This was the first time I had heard about this program, for some reason it was not listed under graduate programs when I applied. Is there any way in which I can possible transfer to this program (they are in two separate departments)? I would rather switch now than switch later on. Do you think I would have to repeat the application process all over again, or will my current department transfer my application materials to the Department of Environmental Sciences? Also, I realize that I could probably get a similar if not the same job if I went through with my current program, but it is an MSc in Capacity Development and many environmental consulting jobs require MSc Environmental Sciences or MES (or anything along those lines). I mean if I am going to spend two years in school, might as well do something that closely relates to my interests. Also, I feel bad about switching, I really don't want to come across as a jerk to my temporary advisor.

Is the thesis option required for a PhD?

Hi Guys, I will be starting grad school in the fall. I live about 45 minutes away from the school I'll be attending but I really dont want to have to drive almost 2 hours both ways so I have decided to live off campus. I really dont know anybody who goes there, so I dont know what to do in terms of finding roommates....the last thing I want is to be stuck with people I dont get along with, any tips? Also, how were you experiences with your roommates...if u had any................I mean, I am the type of person who would like to become friends, Id want to get to know them........im not sure if id want to stay with people who are stuck in their rooms all day and dont communicate with each other..

Hey guys, I have recently been admitted to MSc. in Capacity/ International Development. I am very interested in this field, I want to specifically focus on development through environmental conservation. I would like to go into consulting for a bit once I graduate. However, I would like to know basically....how far will a masters in international development get me? Have I made the right decision to go to grad school for this? I have heard people say the level of unemployment or underemployment in this field is high. I really dont want to spend all that money, and spend 2 years...only to see it all go to a waste. If anyone is studying international development or is a graduate.....please feel free to leave any suggestions.

Glad you asked! Its basically focused on rural planning and development. You can study this from many different perspectives ie. social sciences, economics, engineering or environmental sciences (depending upon what you studied in your undergrad). Hey guys, So I'll have to choose between the major thesis paper (which I assume is the easier route) or thesis option. I have had people tell me I should stick with the thesis based option if I want to pursue a PhD.......is this true? What would you guys suggest? I don't mind research in general, I like finding and analyzing information and drawing conclusions. However, I am worried the thesis option might be too stressful....I have seen my friends panic. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hey guys! I will be attending Guelph University in the fall, I live about 40 minutes away right now. I was wondering should I live on campus or should I commute from home everyday? As for the traffic, its not that bad, and there is a bus that goes straight from my street to Guelph. Thanks

I just wanted to get some suggestions as to what I can do this summer before I start school (September 2012) ? Also, this program is "self funded", so would I be able to apply to RA or TA positions?
