  1. apps are done.. the wait has begun... too drained from apps to be bothered about the wait:)

  2. unless you application is not support by research/work experience, you might wanna go in for GRE. Its more of a cut-off parameter. I haace check many uni where your quant score might be fine. But than again am from chemical/materials and you seem from comp.sc&eng.
  3. hmmm. verbal turn out to be tricky.being an internatinal and engineering applicant i dont not give much credence to verbal section. At the end, we work with number language. to top it off, i was recovering form a bad viral before my GRE. I had given GRE back in 2005 and had got a score of just 380 here i did all the cramping one could do, consistently score 550+ on practice test. My diag score was 470 So this time i had decided to follow different approch. just focused on reading comprehension part. when you get 8-12 question from that, you ought to be focus on that.So i practiced couple of them in three days before the exam. Could not push more cos of my viral.that fetched me a score of 152 which is acceptable for good schhol when looking at engg PhD. So you can take my system, solve a lot of RC as they are more than 50% of verbal. solving RC will eventually help you out with fill in the blanks. I feel the new gre is no more about the cramping and knowing a huge list of vocab. It basically know how read and extract the right info. Knowing the roots helps you a lot the other part Whatever i have said is on my personal experience. Might be different for you so you never know. And for quants if you do basic geometry and algebra you will be in 150s. and for the likes of stats and probability, jus rem the formulaes
  4. Hello everyone, I am potential international PhD applicant to the chemical engineering dept of Notre Dame. I have submitted my application nearly 10 days back.based on the website and few papers i iike the dept. research philosophy. Am hoping to get some reviews of this uni from fellow grad students here. If anyone can talk department quality that would be great

  7. anyone ready to read and critique my SOP
  8. Hello everyone, I am international student from India looking for a PhD admit this fall. Am nearly done with my SOP but being a non native speaker i flounder when writing an essay. I have been reading it for many hours by now and i am sure i am going to miss obvious mistake which can make or break my chances. I would request some people over here with a good command on the flow of the language help me in reviewing my essay. I would not like to put up my SOP as cut and paste thing on the wall here. if anyone is interested in helping me jus leave a mess i will send you a mess. thanks
  9. 1.there isno need to explain the PU project, its immaterial 2. DOnt explain the death of friend, say it in a more respectful manner. Pls be precise. This is more like writing you resume in words. 3. TCS para is just a waste. You got places.Say that and go to explain the project you have worked with 4. Talk abt the uni man, not canada. 5. Your SOP is just too long of a read for ME prog. With jus a BE and 2 yrs exp, you should keep it below 600 words man. DO not explain your resume in word. Explain the motivation for ME. PLus being an engineering it has to be tech motivated. 6.Get some who has excellent command over english to proof read it
  10. Hi, It seems like you have hit a rough patch. Indeed a very rough patch. My advice i think is simple. When doing a PhD project, if everything seems crap and you project motivates you to drag youself to the lab, then pls do not quit completely. If the project has become completely immaterial for you, then a smart choice would be to quit PhD, instead get a master's from the same institute. There is no need to reapply again, you have already taken enough courses, get a Master's in the program. Also, it really it not a requirement for you to get a PhD and enter academia as a research professor. Am sure there are so many colleges, community colleges or just bachelor's granting college where you can go and teach. You can even enter schools witha PhD. if you decide to take this path, then you might need to find middle ground. Forget about what happened. Think about what you have, slowly and steadily tighten your priorites and lower the goal of your research, and try getting a degree ASAp. i guess,with2-3 publication and 2-2.5 more years you can move on. I am sure, its more easier said then done, but if make a decision when you get panicked, there is a good chance u might regreat this in the future. better take a vacation, come back relaxed a bit and think over lil more. talk to friends and strangers... the more you can discuss the problem the more informed decision u can make
  11. and does anything have a safety school?
  12. i agree, as a graduate forum i expected this to be more crowded discussion... but i guess there something amiss here... exp for a mat science dept which is so interdisciplinary... anyway am still working through the statement of purpose, hopefully i will be able to make it to cornell's deadline
  13. where ur GRE and class position?
  14. hmmm.... i have heard it being moderate. well its my safety school
  15. everyone, lets start making the list of univ where you have applied. Never know, we might end up in a same dept and univ
  16. no one?
  17. thanks for the reply, well pulication are out of question now... so am jus going to apply with my current record. lets see how it works out anyonr of you have a dream uni?
  18. i did my MEng from CCNY and i know for a sure you will be able to get in there. I know the PhD admission criteria is relatively easier when compared to other people. Your profile looks decent enough mate. The main thing to remember here is, when considering your application your reco and SOP will be the make and break factor.. not your GRE you score allows them to filter you through initial screening... anyways best of luck.. plus i know a grad student from columbia Mech Engg, he had to leave the prog cos after admitting him, they ran out of funds
  19. Reagrding GPA for UT austin, am a chemical engineering major, and from the website what they mention is, on an avg the GPA of incoing PhD class is around 3.9. With that in mind, i do know a lot of people who make sure they have loads of research experience (UN lab rotation, Industrial and national Lab Internship which inturn gets them at extra reco ), plus one of the best thing you can do when you are still in coll for your UG, pick up couple of graduate courses and ace them. That will be an added advantage Now whatever i have said pertain mainly to the chemical engineering domain but it would be universally true for any department you are looking in any of the top rung universities
  20. does the brand name of the graduate institute matter's to you? if not there are many universities throughout US where you can try for a graduate admit. I would suggest you to take up PhD because if you take of MS you will have study 4-5 pre-req courses in chemical engineering and then nearly 8-10 courses for MS and assume that you would want to get a thesis too. I think you will have a good shot at many places if you willing to let go of the brand name tag. at the end of end, your work is important. i agree UCB/Caltech/MIT trumps Northeastern by miles and miles but then people from northeastern are qualified Chemical engineer who can apply to all the engineering jobs that aa MIT grad can apply. mess me if you want to discuss more.
  21. UG: regular Indian institute, % system 72% , >3.5 GPA by US standard PG : regular Uni in NYC, GPA 3.52 GRE Yet to give.. hate it dont like it... #LOR :3: looking for at least 2 from grad school and one from india Paper/patents/Scholarship: 1 patent one puny scholarship Uni App: going to apply USA - : CMU, Cornell, Penn State, Uni.Washington, Drexel, Utah, Rutgers (list will expand based on GRE EU- EPFL, ETH, Cambridge, Warwick, Imperial Asia: Nanyang Tech Australia :Uni. Queensland, Monash University, Uni.Melbourne Except USA, have get a project and supervisor then applt
  22. hows the application build up going on!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. hmmm.. if am in your position i would try to continue in the same lab. If not then you would wanna ask ur PI a place he would suggest. Every dept has a min GPA to apply .. check the official req from the site and unofficial by talking to someone in the admisoin's in that school.
  24. any opinion regarding the chemical engineering dept at UTAH??? PhD program
