i also kind of wondering if there are any difference between English Department and Comp Lit Department in terms of looking for candidates? Are most PhD in English Department in USA native English speakers? I got both offers of MA programme at my local University (Comp Lit / English Studies) and I am on dilemma choosing which one would be more suitable for my future PhD pursue. Anyone got any idea if a non-native English speaker wants to pursue a PhD in USA, which programme would benefit more?

I am flattered : ) actually my English is not that good, at least not fluent in speaking and listening, but I love its language, it motivates me to move on I am not sure (and it really concerns me) if it is a strong point as having Chinese language when applying PhD is US. Most university's websites I've seen that the second languages they require are mostly western ones like Greek, Spanish, German, French whatever....... : (

nimhicaz. i think your strong point is knowing other languages than English like Turkish and Germen, which is a plus for comparative studies. I did not major in Lit. in BA myself too, but I will pursue master in Comp. Lit. also next year (and i am an international student as well) I hope to enter PhD is USA as well in the near future. So don't give your hope up, and try to see if a MA in Lit. really interests you.

lol i totally agree with you one of my students brought a 1 gallon Coke and drink it all by himself and thinking he was rich or proud of buying that sh!t and didn't realize it was his parents pay for it and not having a single respect to the tutors during class and kept of cracking jokes like his own personal playground.......i am enough with tutoring...it's not about teaching English, it is about testing your patience

Hi all. I am newbie here, and nice to meet you all. Firstly I am an oversea student from Hong Kong. Are you guys all studying/working in America? I need some expert advices from you guys as I am new to research stuffs and PhD things like that....and I think you guys could probably help me out. back to topic, I will be pursuing my Master in Comp Lit. in Hong Kong next academic year, and I desperately want a Research Assistant post along with my Master study as I believe it would help me gain some experience in that area and somehow facilitate my PhD application 2 years later. I didn't have any research experience before. The question is what are you guys suggestions on how to ask for a RA post from professors? Should I just direct email them and ask them if they are looking for a RA? Are professors willing to recruit me if I am just a fresh undergraduate student with formerly no research background? I appreciate any advice : )

no one, or majority of people do PhD in humanities for the sake of career security. If ones want enough money, then forget about Humanities and go to Business School. The value of pursuing a humanities PhD is not that shallow as that article talked about.
