Don't look at what classes are being taught, look at what the faculty are researching. Are there any articles in particular you're drawn to? See where those profs are and if they seem to focus on that area (versus if they only wrote one article on that subject 10 years ago).

HM. My field only got 4 additional awards this round. 44 HM total. My reviews were all the same: E/VG I needed to more specifically address broader impacts of my study, even though I "did a good job" addressing broader impacts...

For grad students?! I know undergrads who TA at another school and get that, but their grad students get paid more. Wow.
-
TA positions in my department get about $11,700. I kid you not. No summer funding. I did get a fellowship for next year for $25,000 so most of that is going into savings if I don't get this award.

Has anyone ever called to ask what type of "maintenance" is happening? Maybe they'll slip up and tell us! I can't call where I am right now.
-
I'm in the social sciences, too. I'm all about stats!
-
Or about negative binomial regression on SPSS...

Something seems to be happening at NSF. This afternoon I got two new program solicitations from them. I generally get maybe one per week but I got TWO in one day. Not that this or anything else we've mentioned the past 181 pages means anything...
-
Dang! Who's cooking for you?! I'll probably have a peanut butter and banana sandwich because I'm out of food and don't have time to cook.
-
I don't remember, when was the "two weeks" note put up?
-
Thanks for posting that, Meowser!

Sweet, it's nice to know I definitely get at least HM. I was going to call late in the afternoon but students actually showed up to office hours so I didn't get a chance.
-
Thank you! I'll call later in the day to see if they know anything new.
-
Has anyone tried calling yet this morning? I'll report when I do.

I'm not sure if they do this anymore, but Cracker Barrel used to let you rent audiobooks and return them at any location. If you don't have an MP3 player, this is another option (I think). Or rent some from your current library and mail them back to the library or a friend to return. For those of you wanting to drive cross-country alone: do you think you could find a friend or parent to join you and then fly back? It would really help and be a lot safer.

To be honest, I'd try to put off graduation at least one more year. Use that last year to publish or work on a grant application. This will be a tremendous help when you try to find a job.

I don't think this is correct. Why would the budget affect the number of honorable mentions vs. rejections? HM has nothing to do with budget, as far as I can tell. She said something along the lines of "due to budget complexities, we have not determined the number of honorable mentions." I take that to mean the number of HM vs. awardees.

That's posted on http://www.nsfgrfp.org/ Under Current Program News it says Nothing about more awards (only HM).

Strange that you didn't get the email!
-
I'm social science and still haven't heard anything. Last names starts with K. No email, no nothing.

Once again, everyone assumes it's all guys on here! Nope, I'm a girl. I created my handle just for this thread. No real story behind it. I'm a first year applicant, but it's my last chance to apply. I heard about this fellowship from someone else last spring and thought I'd give it a shot. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but I can't help it. I even had a dream I got my rating sheets back and they were awful.
-
Dang, I just got some spam email that had "award winner" in the subject. I got really excited for a second.
-
Oh, but they're my professors! Regarding the dating of undergrads, we were told they would kick us out of the department/university if we dated one of our students. "If it's true love, it can wait" is what we were told.
-
I am finding it very frustrating these first couple of years. My department is small and all but three of us are in committed relationships (many with kids). I normally date older (not a lot older, just a few years) people so undergrads are definitely out of the question. Plus, they seem so immature. I find myself crushing on professors, which obviously is not going to go anywhere. I figure I will meet someone when I get my first job, just like I thought I would meet someone in grad school rather than undergrad...

I never scrolled down on fastlane's page that lets you select the year for which you want to view the awards list. I just did and it says this: Does this mean anything? I hadn't selected a year yet (2009 isn't an option).
