  1. I think that last year people were notified early in September (7th or so?). You'll hear from the responsible person at your school, not directly from FH, so it varies.
  2. Whether or not the Fulbright covers MA degree study varies by country. For example, the UK country profile states that "Candidates may pursue independent post-BA-level research, or undertake a graduate degree program with affiliation at any accredited academic institution," but this is defitely not the case for Japan.
  3. Did you already browse the Fulbright UK site: This may clarify things a bit: http://www.fulbright.org.uk/fulbright-awards/exchanges-to-the-uk/faqs/selection-criteria-faqs
  4. In my own experience/at my university only: Payment for services as a TA is usually not called a "stipend," it is a salary and processed through normal payroll procedures. It is not counted in financial aid calculations, and therefore does not reduce the amount of your loan eligibility. A "stipend" is usually an award you are receiving from your department or school (fellowship, scholarship, grant) that does figure into your financial aid calculations and reduces your loan eligibility. Sorry, this may just be more confusing, as the terminology and procedures probably vary from uni to uni... You will, unfortunately, probably have to consult your Financial Aid office to see how they handle whatever award you are getting.
  5. I have a question about the award period, maybe you guys know the answer. On the announcement, it says: Project Period: The institutional project period is 18 months, beginning October 1, 2013. Students may request funding for a period of no less than 6 months and no more than 12 months. Do you know if this means the project has to start within 18 months of Oct. 1, or has to be completed within 18 months of Oct. 1? Thanks!!
  6. Well, while waiting for the announcement, I do have a FH question. I've looked at the info on the DOE website and still am not sure. Can one include language study as a part of the proposed project? For example, a Summer intensive program to brush up on language before conducting research? Thanks.
  7. Thanks, I thought it might be something like that. The FH is just so out of sync with the other award cycles...
  8. OK, I'm a little confused. If you do a FH DDRA 2013-3014 search, you'll find people already receiving awards. Is this just deferrals, or perhaps people who started their awards later in the award period? Or did I miss something?
  9. Greetings 1Q84, I have no experience with this and I'm not an international student, but since you're not getting any other bites here, I'll try to help: It may be that you're looking in the wrong place for the information you need? For example, I see that you're applying to USC. On this page: http://www.usc.edu/admission/graduate/international/financialsupport.html You can find the following information: The U.S. government requires that all international applicants provide proof of ability to pay tuition and living expenses for themselves and their dependents (if applicable) before a formal letter of admission and an I-20 or DS-2019 Certificate of Eligibility can be issued (my emphasis). This certainly looks like a Catch-22 type situation, and I'm guessing you will have to find a human to ask questions. I'm guessing that the place to go for answers may not be grad secretaries (as you say, they're busy), but International Student Servies (ie, for USC, http://sait.usc.edu/ois/)? Good luck, and hopefully someone with actual experience will step in here!
  10. Well, I just had to thank you fellow FHers for spending a few weeks worrying with me. It was helpful to have you here. Despite the failed effort. Maybe next year... I think the application deadline for the next round of FH will be coming up soon!
  11. Hasn't anybody heard anything??????? At least it will be over tomorrow.
  12. Congratulations moinonplus1! So, from what I understand, not hearing anything by the 27th = no. Apparently we only get a notification if we're upgraded.
  13. That's very interesting about the alternate rankings. Has anyone else called Amy to find out about this? I would hesitate to call her because last time it was clear that she's really busy. I wonder if our campus contacts might already have this information.
  14. I wonder how things worked out for you, Kexin? Did you sort things out? BTW I noticed that you also posted on the FB 2012 thread implying that if you switch from FB to FH some FB alternate would be bumped up. However, my classmate was a FB alternate and she said that alternate status ended in August. That is to say, no more FB awards are made after August even if people who have accepted change their minds. edited to add: Also BTW, no, I'm not a China applicant waiting to snatch your spot!
  15. Well, people, any news? Alternates please let us know if you hear anything. We should hear one way or the other soon...
  16. According to my campus rep, she was notified on Friday but wouldn't be sending out notices to applicants until next week. I only found out my status because I called her yesterday. Sorry ebuckner, you may have to wait until Monday unless your campus rep works on Saturdays?
  17. Hey Kexin, It looks if you change your mind you might have to refund the money you received for the CLEA? See http://us.fulbrighto...ncement-awards: "N.B.: Should the CLEA grantee decline to take up the Fulbright Full or ETA Grant for any reason not approved by ECA subsequent to CLEA activities, he/she will be obliged to refund to IIE or the Fulbright Commission/Foundation all funds expended to or on behalf of him/her for CLEA and costs of pre-departure and in-country orientations." They make it pretty clear that the CLEA is a component of your Fulbright grant and by accepting one you're committed to both. And as far as I can tell, one can only receive both the FB and the FH if there is a year's gap in between. I think you're going to have to call the FB office and ask someone about this... Edited to add: You know, the FB and the FH are not administered in the same way or by the same organization. So it probably is not as easy as just "switching," especially since you are already using FB funds...
  18. Oh, sorry, I realize that my last post was unclear. Alternates will be notified if they will or will not receive a fellowship by Sept. 27th. (so there's no hanging around for endless months wondering like there seems to be for the regular Fulbright).
  19. Alternate here too...sadly sighing along with you, moinonplus1. Apparently all alternates will be notified of their status before Sept. 27, because funds need to be committed by the 27th. Those of you waiting: call your campus rep.
  20. Hey, thanks you guys for working on getting all of us more info! I'll be keeping an eye out for updates...
  21. I know! I assume that rules out next week, which she probably would have known. I even asked her if it would be the first half of September or the second half. She said she had no idea but that she hoped it would be the first half because "the awards have to be made by September 27th." Not sure what that means? People will be told the results and have to accept or decline by the 27th? Sorry my research hasn't turned out to be very helpful.
  22. FYI: spoke to Amy Wilson today and she seems to have no idea when in September the results will be announced.
  23. Somehow I managed not to see this page before...you have all probably already looked at this, but: http://ecfr.gpoacces....3.1.31&idno=34
  24. Thanks fuzzylogician, Was this for defense of comps/prospectus? I have only heard that my committee will be asking me questions, not that I have to talk about my research. (of course, as you say, this differs from program to program...)
  25. Yikes! I know that this is an old thread but...what is an "opening presentation speech" and does everyone need one? My defense is really soon and nobody has told me anything about this. (my defense is of my comps and prospectus)
