  1. @Talkitout-

Since you did your undergrad at northwestern could you tell me anything about how competitive the slp classes are at the undergrad level? i have been admitted into the three year program, but i know that northwestern is super competitive especially at the undergrad level so i'm just wondering if the classes are insanely hard? i am willing to work hard for the next three years but nu scares me a little...

I'm not sure what you mean by competitive--because it's a program where students work together, not against each other.  I don't think the CSD curriculum at Northwestern is hard at all, and I've taken around 8 graduate-level courses.  I actually think the program tends to "dumb-down" certain concepts for the graduate level students, especially for those who have no science background.  If you work hard and put effort into each course, you will likely get a B+ or higher in all of your courses.  The science classes (anatomy, voice, dysphagia) are known to be hard classes--but if you study, A's are possible.

As an undergraduate student, I was super involved in extra curricular activities and definitely put school on the back burner at times.  Even then, I still averaged a 3.9 in my CSD coursework.  I have no doubt that if I put 100% of my time into school I could've gotten a 4.0.  I think that's possible for anyone if they put their mind to it.

    I hope this helps!

  2. I am dying to hear back from UT Austin.  I want to fly out there next week during my spring break, but I don't want to book the flight until I get in...and flights are gradually getting super expensive.  Bah!

I wish all schools had to get back to you by March 15th so that you have solid month to make a decision.  I'm getting really nervous about where to go, especially since I'm still waiting on two schools to get back to me.

  3. Hi all. Thought I'd update you.... After the decision is posted in applyyourself, they mailed an email with details not included in the original letter. My decision has to be made there by 3/29. I'm assuming since they overfilled their incoming class last year that they're sending them in batches and seeing how many accept and decline. I will be declining their offer and will mail it in soon. Hopefully some of you will hear back soon.

Where did you hear that a decision needs to be made by 3/29?  I didn't get an email or anything in the mail yet!

  4. I'm dealing with the same problem.  I know it's easy to just tell somebody to go somewhere new--but sometimes being comfortable is all part of the experience!  I know several people that moved to a different city and were not comfortable with their social situation and were lonely--and that affects their overall experience.  Really balance out how open you are to meeting new people, learning in a new environment, and being on your own, etc.

It's a difficult decision.  I'm trying to decide if I want to stay in Chicago/Milwaukee or if I want to move out to Boston. Yikes!

  5. I wish schools (ahem - SDSU, Montclair...alhough Montclair's application was due later so they are forgiven) would notify earlier than April especially if you have to decide by April 15th. That hardly gives me any time to visit (schedule a flight for SDSU) or compare with other programs before having to decide and scrounge up some deposit money to send in.

I know what you mean!  I'm still waiting to hear back from several schools and one of the schools I got in to need me to defer or put a deposit down by tomorrow!  I understand that they want to take people off the waiting list but it's so early in the game that I have no idea what I want to do yet!

On another note, I wish financial packages were given out with acceptances.  It would make the decision process much easier knowing exactly how much it will cost to attend each school.  I know that financial aid is a big factor for many of us--I wish the schools would just realize that too!
