  1. I am in a similar situation. My future school doesn't seem to offer any form of subsidized housing or daycare.. uni housing and daycare are more expensive than external ones ! and I am not even sure if they have a place for my baby. My husband is not working but he will not be living with us at least in the first semester !
  2. Are international students allowed to work ? In addition to work as a RA or TA? are they allowed to take an extra job? at the university or as interns during semesters and summers? and is it doable? I am asking about ways of making extra money in addition to school funding but hopefully in a relevant area of study. Has anyone done this before? is it legal? and is it doable given the schedule/load of PhD life (in engineering) ?
  3. i have a similar situation. I start my phd in electrical eng. at RPI in the fall. My husband is applying now for an MBA at several schools in NYC and SF and wants to move permanently to either of the 2 cities. I hate to stop or interrupt my career indefinitely. So what are my options here, i do not want to drop out of the program as we do not have the acceptance for my husband yet, so we are not sure we will move.
  4. Hi I am also starting in the Fall 2012. Electrical eng. PhD. congratulations to all !

    Troy, NY

I can't find a thread about Troy so I hope this one is not a duplicate. I got accepted at an RPI PhD program. I will be moving with my family from outside the US. My questions are about costs and "infant" friendly activities/places. we are a family of three: me, my husband and our baby girl of almost one year: expected rent for a small family house in a safe / child-friendly neighborhood (what are some of these neighborhoods and nice communities) expected internet/electricity/heating costs given the cold winters as well as other activities/places for a young couple
  6. Hey Velvet Ghost, I was also accepted at RPI and will start my PhD in the fall this year. I am looking for similar information but my program is electrical engineering. I have one question for you though. Since I am TA as well. How did you apply to a lab and what kind of work will you be starting if you're not an RA now?
