  1. I am also waiting to hear from two Canadian schools, Alberta and Calgary. It's really weird because I've heard from all the others in the states and I don't really know what to think about these two. Do Canadian schools just take longer to make decisions?
  2. Still waiting I'm really excited about one of the schools I got accepted at. But since I have no idea about funding I feel like I need to wait and hear from everyone or I'll end up making a rash decision.
  3. I also found one at this website http://www.stat.tamu.edu/~jnewton/nrc_r ... rea35.html from the 1995 NRC report. I tend to agree that strong cultural programs are more highly ranked than strong physical programs. But it all gets really murky because anthropology has so many different specialties. Really, I wouldn't think of going to any of the programs in the top 10 from the website above because there aren't any bioarchaeologists doing the kind of research I'm interested in. It all really depends on what you're interested in, so rankings for anthro are kind of meaningless to me as the top ranked programs have no appeal. Plus these rankings are pretty old! Edit: I kind of like the rankings from the 2000 National Doctoral Program Survey ( http://survey.nagps.org/getWeights.php? ... ptType=163 )better because they break things down and let you rank programs based on things like mentoring and program climate, which make more sense to me than the NRC report!
  4. I would focus on you experiences and how they make you qualified for the program you are applying to. I spent the majority of my personal statement talking about my interest in the subject (I also have an interdisciplinary background so I took the time to explain that) and then my various research and other experiences from undergrad and how they have prepared me for graduate studies. I would also talk about why you want to attend this particular program. I wouldn't really mention your eventual goal of PhD if you feel that will be frowned upon by the selection committee, just focus on why you are right for the program. I don't know if that helps, but good luck!
  5. Well, I was rejected from UNC today. But was accepted to Arizona State earlier in the week! I'm excited because it was one of my top choices! None of the schools I've been accepted to have made funding decisions though! :-\ Congrats to everyone who has been accepted and I'm sorry to hear about all the rejections that have been rolling in!
  6. I'm also waiting to hear about funding. I've been accepted to 2 schools, one of which is at the top of my list, but I feel like in the end funding is going to affect my decision. It doesn't help that I still haven't heard anything from three of the schools I applied to! Good luck to everyone, I hope we all get lovely funding packages!
  7. Ugh. So I dropped my phone in a puddle today and now it's not working. So of course I'm freaking out because what if a school calls!? (yeah right) Oh well, hopefully I can get a new/working phone tomorrow! I really hope that I hear from some more schools soon! The stress of waiting is frying my brain!
  8. It doesn't really sound to me like she knows, that seems like something she would tell everyone. Either way it sounds like you'll know by the end of the week. Good luck!
  9. Yay! It's Monday! Business and mail resume! (It's sad how excited the grad school application process has made me about Mondays . . . scary really)
  10. Congrats! That's really exciting that you got into your first choice with a great financial package! I guess all the worry and waiting is over for you now you can sit back and relax!
  11. Yeah, Florida is lame. I would pick Chapel Hill over Florida anyday!
  12. Okay, apparently I gave Florida my school address (which I completely do not remember doing) and I got a letter today saying I was not selected for admission. Oh well. I'm glad I know now. Here's hoping I get into a better school!
  13. Lol! Thanks. I've been frantically stalking my e-mail today hoping they'd (or any other program!) would send me something that way. For some reason I'm desperate to hear from some of my schools, especially Florida and Chapel Hill, because they're applications were due so long ago! Thanks for keeping me updated!
  14. Aww. That stinks, maybe they're having some weird issues and don't mean to come across as mean? (or not?!) I still haven't heard anything either. *nervous twitch* I'm running through all these crazy scenarios where magically my application wasn't complete and they just never bothered to tell me. The worst part is that if it comes in the post, I won't be able to find out until Sunday, since my parents are going out of town for the rest of the week. Gross. Grad school admissions are so stressful.
  15. Oh my gosh, I felt the same way today. Never have I been sadder not to get mail!
  16. Well, the weekend is past and I haven't heard anything from Florida. My mom called me several times this weekend for various things and each time I got all excited but alas, no news. Oh well there is always tomorrow. Good luck to everyone for this week! Hopefully we'll all get some good news!
  17. Sounds great! I think my mom is going to kill me if I call any more to see if there are any letters in the mail for me! (I had everything send to my house instead of at school- the campus mail system makes me nervous!) I can't wait to start hearing from more schools! But I know the ones I want to go to the most won't be sending stuff out for a while.
  18. Gross. I have no idea when my top schools are meeting to decide but if I did I'm sure it would drive me to insanity. But! Today is the day I mentally fixed for hearing from Florida, so basically I'm on pins and needles waiting. Of course if I don't hear I'll be crushed.
  19. Yay! I was just really excited to hear from someone. I'm kind of in the same boat, it's not my top choice but it's still pretty amazing. I'm conflicted because the professor they have there with my research interest would be fantastic to work with but is older and anthro PhDs take a long time. I have also heard that Madison is really fun and that makes it more attractive but I'll have to wait till I hear back from other schools before I can even come close to making a decision.
  20. That's weird. I love this forum because I'm actually talking to people who know what I'm going through. It's really nice to be able to identify with other people, as I feel like my friends are having either completely different experiences or have no idea what I'm talking about. I hope we all get into great schools!
  21. Hey guys! I heard back from my first school today and I've been accepted at Wisconsin! This is really exciting since I was getting pretty nervous and acting pretty ridiculous about the whole grad school thing. Here's hoping for a positive response from Florida later in the week!
  22. Oh! That makes me feel a lot better. I'm starting to get worried since people are starting to hear back from places and I haven't heard anything at all! But I think I can handle waiting till the end of the week to find out. :-)
  23. Aww. That stinks. :-( I have also not heard anything from Florida which is a little worrisome. What do you think that means?
  24. Oh my gosh that's great! I applied to Wisconsin too, but with an archaeology concentration, so maybe that's different! I'm just glad people are hearing back, I want this misery of waiting to end!
