  1. I guess I'll throw mine into the ring. It isn't a super focused blog, but I talk a lot about sociology, and my process in applying to grad school. My life will be getting more interesting after I move to Europe for a Fulbright, so maybe that will help readership, haha www.jamesroom.org
  2. Hey guys, just got my GRE scores today, and I'm pretty happy with them, with a 162 Quant and a 170 Verbal. I'm planning on applying to some of the top Sociology PhD programs, for example, Harvard, Berkeley, Stanford. Anyway, I'm decently quant heavy in my research, I use a lot of data mining, especially with Python, some I'm wondering if that quant score is going to be a question mark. Although, I pair those large data sets with more personal methods, like interviews. I know it's a decent score, but it seems like it's fairly common for quant heavy people to score perfectly on that section. TL; DR do soc programs want to see a very strong quant score if your research includes quantitative methods?
  3. Hey guys, I'm new here, but planning on applying to PhD programs in Sociology this year. I did my senior thesis on Massively Multiplayer online games and the cultures that they spawn, and I really enjoyed it, so I'd like to continue with that line of research. I've sort of framed my research as an inquiry into why people "migrate," and "colonize" these new digital worlds, that are both very similar, and in some, ways, very different than our own. I'm mostly interested in the networks that people form in this way. So, I'm wondering if you guys know of any programs doing work on internet culture/ social networks. I've got a few ideas, but anymore input would be great, thanks. P.S. I know some programs require an interview. I'll be in Europe on a Fulbright, so that makes it a little hard for me to get back to the States. Are most admissions committees are o.k. with phone, or Skype interviews? Thanks in advance.
