  1. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but from what I've gathered the orientation is mandatory. If you don't attend they could rescind your grant. Maybe in special cases they might make an exception? I would email the program manager for your region and ask; that would probably be the best way to get a complete answer!

I actually emailed Fulbright about the orientation (I haven't heard any news, but I did get a save the date email), because it conflicts with a summer scholarship for me (I will be out of the country). They said selected candidates can petition for an exemption, but it was very vague. So, maybe? I'm not sure what qualifies though.

  2. My Fulbright advisor emailed me today to ask me how I'm holding up, adding that she's been surprised that there have not been any notifications for my country (Moldova) quite yet, and I want to be like....*bangs head on desk from impatience*

(At this rate, I'll have no more friends left, given how often I've been complaining...gotta stay positive!)

Catsushi, it's nice that you have an advisor that cares!

Sometimes I think, oh if I had applied to such and such country (Russia, most likely) instead, I would have heard already!!

  3. Triscuit and any other lurkers out there, just want to say I was an alternate last year and this year I reapplied and was accepted. So, if this is something you really want, try, try again! Don't lose hope.

  4. I kind of thought the spreadsheet was structured that way because there weren't enough entries for each country on their own, plus you know how people love to lump the Stans together.  :-P

Also, I am so with you on the schoolwork thing!

  5. Do you think Central Asia notifies en masse like Sub Saharan Africa did? I can't afford to wait until May- just received a different fellowship notification I have to reply to by May 1.

  6. Did any of you just receive an email from Fulbright about saving the date for pre-departure orientation? I'm sure they send them out to all recommended applicants, but I figured it was worth checking on.

Also, so not cool for Fulbright to be sending out emails at this point that aren't decisions (do they want me to die an early death?)

I didn't get the email.  Uh oh. :/ Maybe it depends on your region? I'm South/Central Asia. What region are you guys in?

  7. UGhhh story of my life. Well, best of luck!

Hmmm...but we don't apply for visas till the summer, and then we do so through our host institutions I think, so WHY.

Yeah, I agree with you on the visa thing. We probably won't have to apply until after we are accepted. Maybe the Central Asian republics like to notify together?

  8. Hey! I'm applying to Tajikistan! I am hoping for earlier notifications, because my interviewer said they were sending their rankings to DC around late February. So, basically all that is left is the Fulbright board certification. Except, in the past Tajikistan notifies the last week in April? Basically no idea what is going on/taking so long. Happy to see another Central Asian applicant though!

  9. So this evening I have a meeting that was scheduled months ago with the artistic directors of the modern dance company I'm in... They are definitely expecting to know about the Fulbright for UK...

Hey, you're in a modern dance company? That's awesome! I teach modern dance occasionally- I actually have a BFA. Are you applying for an Arts Fulbright? Where?
