  1. Hi, I'm going to be starting my MS Mechanical Engineering in the Fall. Is now too soon to contact professors that I would like to be my advisor? Or, should I wait until my first semester? I'm the first in my family to obtain a grad degree, so this is a new experience for me and I don't have anyone around to ask. Thanks everyone! -me
  2. I got into my choice program for an MSME without funding. I'm getting more excited about pursuing a research path and thinking more seriously about getting a PhD. How hard is it to transition to a PhD program after being admitted into a Masters program. Do I have to re-apply or can I just take the qualifying exam/maintain the Phd GPA?
  3. My vote is go to UMich. In general, Umich has a stronger ME program (from the research I've done). But, you should be looking at the labs/research to see if it meshes with your interests. That should be the deciding factor. In regards to the business classes, UMich's MBA program is also very highly ranked. Both programs are great if you want to dabble in some business classes.
