  1. You should definitely learn German! I may stand alone here, but I actually think it's quite nice to listen to. Listening to French radio, on the other hand, makes me want to jump in the nearest river. Can you read and write Chinese? My mother is a native Chinese speaker, so she keeps scolding me for learning other languages and avoiding Chinese... I can understand a moderate amount, but my speaking is atrocious. Don't get me wrong -- I'm totally shocked/thrilled with how things have turned out so far! I'm just an impatient person. In any case, I really really hope things work out for you!
  2. Oh no, I didn't want to trigger any trauma! That sounds like a cool area to study. Would you be doing more modern stuff (like postwar)? Contemporary Chinese also sounds awesome, and Penn State would definitely be a great place to do that. (Knock on wood) I'm still kind of interested in everything, but what I proposed to study is postwar Dutch, German, American, and to a lesser extent French literature. I'd like to discuss gender and identity problems, though at this point I'm still figuring out what my focus will be. I'd also love the opportunity to pick up an Asian language!
  3. BTW, would you mind sharing what your area of interest is, Gustav?
  4. Still nothing from Penn State, guys? The wait is killing me!
  5. Hey Rose, thanks! No, my application status is still in review. The DGS said they would be meeting around today or very soon to finalize decisions. I hope you get some good news! And Gustav: no call from Penn State yet.......... but congrats on the waitlist at WUSTL, maybe we'll be classmates!
  6. Um so I keep calling people by their wrong names. First, the Billy thing. THEN I wrote an e-mail to the DGS and called her by a completely unrelated name (well, both have 'G' in them...). She kindly corrected me, but I am MORTIFIED. Will this totally ruin my chance for good funding?? (Kidding. Kind of.)
  7. Hey Gustav! They said the department is meeting on Friday to make final decisions, so we should be getting a call this weekend. I'm just curious - was Jonathan Eburne one of your interviewers? (Just wondering if he attends all the meetings.) Good luck! Also, if anyone's curious: Stanford is looking to notify on February 14. This may make or break a few Valentine's Days.
  8. Thanks! I just e-mailed the main address (complit) and, embarrassingly enough, I addressed it to Billy. However, it was NOT Billy who answered. Oops.
  9. I got impatient and e-mailed the department to check my status. Got a nice surprise! Apparently they're just waiting for funding information. So if you're feeling curious, perhaps drop them a line
  10. So I called Northwestern, and apparently they're down to a final pool of applicants that they're deciding about. The program assistant said to expect decisions within a week or so. Anyone else really hoping for this?
  11. Congrats, Firefox! Do you know if they're done notifying for Michigan? I applied there, but still no peep...
  12. Thanks, guys! You're right, asleepawake - I can't really imagine Lady Mary studying anything. However, I like the nickname
  13. WUSTL is a go! Super excited! I was hoping so hard for a notification today
  14. I didn't apply to Penn, but my UT Austin app still says "in review"...
  15. Congrats on your three acceptances (thus far)! Super jealous.
  16. Did anyone else apply to WashU? I e-mailed the secretary, and she said they hope to have decision letters for ALL (acceptances, waitlists, and rejections) in the middle of this week. Then, if you're nominated for an Olin fellowship, they'll fly you out for an interview on March 4. So impatient!!! Oh, and good luck to you too, Gustav!
  17. Thanks, Magical Realist! I'm glad you have one acceptance under your belt now By the way, can anyone claim the Michigan Comp Lit acceptance?? Seems my source was wrong. Anyway, to whomever you are, congrats!
  18. Thanks for this! I will certainly comb through the department reading up on faculty that might possibly be present... I'm glad that it went well for you! And vvoooommm: I'm in France. Are you abroad too?
  19. NOOOOOOOOO! I keep thinking... six hour time difference, that means I MIGHT hear something before I go to bed...
  20. You had a decision on the website even though you didn't get an e-mail? I'm sorry that your first news was bad news! Now I'm just going to keep refreshing that page all day...
  21. Magical Realist: nope, my interview is next Tuesday. When is yours? So much time to be nervous from now until then...
  22. That's for Comp Lit. Sorry!
  23. Hey y'all! I heard from a student that the adcomm for Michigan will be meeting on February 6. Anyone else apply there?
  24. Congrats, Magical Realist! And I'm sure the pause words will be very impressive. Likewise, I plan on doing a lot of "euuuh"-ing and "ben"-ing if they make me speak French.
  25. What?! We have to speak the languages we'll be studying?? I guess I was too afraid to ask that question. Sigh. As soon as they hear my atrocious accent in French it'll be over for me... I too am hoping that between now and my interview, I'll have an acceptance to keep me afloat. Fingers crossed. In any case, good luck to everyone!
