How to contact a professor before admissions decisions?

Question

Posted

What is the best way to contact a professor before admissions decisions are released?

I would like to contact a few professors whose area of expertise I'm interested in (for a Master's program), but I have not specific research experience and would like to gain some as a lab assistant or volunteer in their lab... I'm not quite sure what the best approach is in emailing them. Any pointers?

Hi there,

just look them up on the faculty webpage and email them.  Professors are happy to respond to perspective students and it’s good to establish a relationship with them before they read your application materials (if they are on the committee and will read them).  You can also call them at their offices, but they will respond to your email.

good luck!
