handson123 Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 do you guys know anything about financial assistance from Stanford for those admitted in the 25-27 Feb period. Are they really working on that or are they just waiting for those admitted during 15-19 Feb to decline their fellowships and give those to us. Will most of those admitted during 25-27 Feb receive some sort of financial assistance or only some will? I am getting increasingly anxious....
handson123 Posted March 3, 2010 Author Posted March 3, 2010 I mean for those admitted to the Ms/PhD track
<3Brains Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 (edited) I have no inside information, but judging from last year's posts (lots of people saying they suddenly got aid very close to April 15), I'd say that what they're doing is waiting for people to decline fellowships that have been offered. There are, I think, two ways this can happen: 1) people who are nominated for SGF have not yet been officially approved by the graduate school. they were offered departmental fellowships in the case that their nominations were not approved, so maybe when SGF is confirmed (March 15), other people will get those departmental fellowships. 2) people decline their offers and their fellowships are given to other people. just speculation! mojojojo Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Yes, I think they have exhausted their supply of fellowships and are just waiting for people to reject them. I'm in kind of a similar situation too (I've been told I was nominated for the SGF, but no news on that yet), so I'm going to wait till 10 April or so before I decide where to go. Even though Stanford gave me a deadline of 20 April to decide, most of my other schools are setting a deadline of 15 April.. So I don't think I'm going to risk waiting till 20 April. On a related note, does anyone know how much does the SGF and the EE departmental fellowship at Stanford (supposedly support for 3 quarters only) pay in terms of stipend? Also, are our stipends taxable? I'm thinking that even though my other schools offered me a slightly lower stipend (as compared to the SGF, which I believe is 32k per year), I might end up having more to spend since the tax rate at California is alot higher..
handson123 Posted March 4, 2010 Author Posted March 4, 2010 So it is very likely that most of those admitted during 25-27 Feb will not receive any aid then...Mojojo, did you also receive a departmental fellowship? (since they also nominate you for the SGF i guess you must be one of their top students)....Have they invited you to the Visit Day? I wonder why they admit us to Ms/PhD without intending to provide any aid ( for those at the bottom of the admit list that is). Should they just reject us and admit us to the MS-Only and make money out of that?
