samjones Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I fell in love with this department and originally thought it'd be the only program i'd apply to this cycle. fortunately, i got real and applied to two other programs/schools but i'm still most anxious to hear (positive news) from CUNY. i feel like i've tried to divert my focus away from this school because (judging from past result reporting on the results page) they notify so late in march that i want to get excited about this program again! SO: anyone hear anything from them yet? or just want to talk about how awesome the department is??
LosingGrip Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I applied to CUNY also, what do you find awesome about the department?
samjones Posted March 5, 2010 Author Posted March 5, 2010 (edited) I applied to CUNY also, what do you find awesome about the department? where do i start? i guess from the first time i got to the department's website i felt like i finally felt validated (research-wise and politically). i had looked at NSSR (great school but you can't apply directly to their phd programs and the funding is worrisome), Columbia and NYU and was really disappointed to find not many people were working on some of the stuff that i find important and thought that maybe i was way off in terms of what's relevant and current in anthro today. then i looked at the CUNY Anthro page and it was perfect for me. I mean, Fernando Coronil, Michael Blim and Marc Edelman are all looking at something that i'm interested in. furthermore, my exchange with Prof. Blim was just really helpful and engaging, and i just felt so welcome by him and when i went to one of his office hours, i felt that the department's space is a really awesome resource and common area to be in for the current grad students. that grad students seemed really friendly with each other, which i think is important. many of the prof offices are in the same space and apart of that space are computer areas, couches, etc. it seemed really cozy. i could actually see myself using the space as a way to immerse myself in the department as well as keep focused on whatever projects i was working on. it was just really cool. did you apply for cultural anthro? why'd you choose to apply to CUNY? Edited March 5, 2010 by samjones
LosingGrip Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I did indeed apply to cultural anthro at cuny and I saw poll or something that said that cuny anthro had the best "quality of life" environments which I thought was encouraging. I actually got more response from some of the professors at the other NYC schools I applied to, but who knows, I haven't heard anything from anyone yet in terms of admissions. That said, I do like to be cozy, and cuny sounds kind of cozy.
foxes Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 I was stalking the results page and I saw one admitted to CUNY! So the gates are open.... Any other lucky one?
samjones Posted March 9, 2010 Author Posted March 9, 2010 i haven't heard anything but i did see that post on the results page. who knows if it's real and who knows if it's just the first of many notifications (good and bad).

babelhead Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I have also been accepted. Hope you all hear good news too.
samjones Posted March 10, 2010 Author Posted March 10, 2010 Is anyone else considering CUNY as their first choice program? I was accepted today and couldn't be happier. Apparently they are accepting 30 people and expect 15 to enroll! I am hoping to be one of those people enrolling but funding is still to be determined for me. So yeah, is anyone else expecting to take up the CUNY offer?

Will know for sure in a week or so when I have heard back from other schools. I am thrilled about this. Good luck everyone (:

They said they had seven or so fellowships and the rest have to have outside funding/receive funding from a university wide fellowship.
LosingGrip Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Congrats SamJones! Did you speak with a professor? Do you know if they are still making offers? Have they secured funding for you/do you have outside funding? They said they had seven or so fellowships and the rest have to have outside funding/receive funding from a university wide fellowship.
samjones Posted March 10, 2010 Author Posted March 10, 2010 Congrats SamJones! Did you speak with a professor? Do you know if they are still making offers? i did speak with a prof. and i thought of this forum towards the end of the conversation and remembered to try to get a little more info than my admissions fate. i did not ask them if they have extended all offers yet (i didn't think of to ask that! sorry!) but did find out that they will extend/have extended about 30 offers and expect 15 folks to take up those offers. about half of that 15 will be awarded departmental funding and a few of the rest will be thrown into the competition for a university-wide fellowship. good luck! i hope you hear from them soon!
samjones Posted March 11, 2010 Author Posted March 11, 2010 i'm having a hard time not taking the typos in my acceptance letter and in the email i was sent by an ad comm member personally. i feel wounded about not being offered funding right off the bat and the typos are salt in the wound. yeah, yeah. at least i'm accepted but i won't be takin gup the offer without funding. ugh! i was hoping an acceptance would lessen my stress!
babelhead Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 Thanks for the information samjones. Has anyone who has been accepted been offered funding? I am very interested in the program. I have been accepted, but am also waiting on news about funding.

I have been accepted, but am also waiting on news about funding. i know that one person has said they were offered an "enhanced chancellor's fellowship" (i don't want to say who so that they can self-identify if they want). i was not offered funding but thrown into the competition for a university-wide fellowship. babelhead, did your letter say that they put you up for the competition? also, it seemed that there might be lost of teaching opportunities that might help with tuition and a stipend... as well as research assistantships. i was reading their financial aid page and i'm not sure but it seems like TA and GAships are not limited to those who are awarded funding packages, so that could totally be an option!
