  1. Thanks! Anyone else heard anything from hopkins yet?
  2. Congrats!! I am totally considering the offer very seriously. Will know for sure in a week or so when I have heard back from other schools. I am thrilled about this. Good luck everyone (:
  3. I posted that. So, its quite real (:
  4. Did you hear anything about how many ppl have been admitted? And was everyone (who have been accepted) also interviewed? Congrats to you! (: Who are you looking to work with?
  5. Who all got wait listed at Rutgers? I got a wait-list email today. And does anyone know how many acceptances there have been?
  6. So its over for those of us who haven't heard as yet? *sound of my heart breaking*
  7. I haven't heard anything as yet either. Waiting, waiting, waiting. And losing a lil hope too.
  8. I think if you haven't heard from Berkeley yet, you can pretty much cross it out from your list. If you want to be sure, just call or email Ned. I emailed him and he immediately told me that I didnt make it (: One less school to worry about for me. He said that they are at the "absolute end of the decision process" and that we will get a short automated email from the grad office soon.
  9. Does anyone know if Boston U has made all its offers already or have they just started?
  10. Yup, I NEED to see it in writing - and SOON - that I have been rejected I can't "move on"!
  11. So, someone got an acceptance email from UCB - it comes up in the results search. Guess this means my rejection email will be here soon enough :s
  12. Just private messaged you. I'd rather bore one person with the details than all the people who are watching this topic (:
  13. Yup, Gigsed, I have applied to Rutgers as well. In fact from your list of schools, I have also applied to Boston and NYU. I didn't actually apply to UC Irvine because Irvine does not make much sense for my partner's future career. So I have had to hit the "big cities". Let me know if you have any other questions about Irvine -- especially when you plan your trip here or are making your final decision. I know that many people would have reservations about living in O.C. - I had huge issues when I was moving here from Phialdelphia -- but in only four months, the place has somwhat grown on me. And yes, the department is wonderful. They are known to hire the most promising young scholars so you would be working with people who are doing "cutting-edge" research in Anthropology. There is also the Center of Ethnography here that George Marcus runs. Of course, you have lots of really good schools in your list so the decision would have to be comparative. And yes, compared to UK and Europe, America will seem very cheap to you no matter where you go!
  14. Gigsed, I moved to Irvine around 3-4 months ago. The PT thing is SO TRUE. I, too, am a completely walking/biking kinda person so it has been hard to adjust to always having to drive ( a lot of which is on highways- ugh). The area has a lot of great biking trails but biking is more of a leisure thing here than getting around since distances are pretty long. Having said that, the campus area is nice and I have seen a lot of students biking around there. Student housing, at least from the outside, looks pretty good and there are quite a few grocery and eating options within the campus. I have been to the UCI library a few times and its pretty okay. As for reputation, UCI Anthro is really one of the up and coming departments in the US. My professors at UPenn all said this same thing when I was moving out here and wanted to know about the department. The weather is absolutely lovely here all year round - as you MUST have heard already. This also means relatively low living costs as far as heating and electricity bills are concerned but of course, this is one of the most expensive areas to live in otherwise (high sales tax, not many cheap eating options although enough to survive, transportation costs etc). That is my general impression of the city so far. Congrats on being accepted and good luck with the rest of the schools! (:
  15. I was expecting them to send decision e-mails this week (I got that idea because I asked the grad coordinator!). But its the end of Thursday already, so I think we will have to wait till next week. I turned in a sucky application to Berk but since this is going to be my first decision, I am just going crazy waiting for it. Just want the "decisions phase" to start alreadddddy! Hang in there.
  16. Hey, Since its been a year when you posted this question (alas, no replies!) I was wondering if you found any fellowships for non-US citizens studying in the US/Canada? If so, please let me know since I am very much in the same boat you were in a year ago (:
  17. I am a non-US citizen and am looking for fellowships to fund my doctoral program in anthropology (US and Canadian schools) - if I get into one that is! I have been looking for fellowships that I would be eligible for but there are hardly any it seems. The situation is all the more complicated given that I have done my MA in the US (so I am not eligible for the scholarships that focus on 'exchange' since they want students who have never studied outside their home countries). So, if anyone has come across fellowships for a non-US citizen interesed in studying anthropology in US/Canada after completing an MA degree from the U.S., let me know please! Thanks (:
  18. AWS, we are all in the same boat as far as stress levels are concerned - good luck to you! "Waiiiiting is the haaardest part!" (: Berk was my first app and hence, the least well-edited (=worst) although that school is my top choice. Ironies
  19. I just emailed Ned at Berkeley and he wrote back that the decisions are being finalized and they will start sending replies this/next week. I was feeling guilty mailing him - since am sure he is being bombarded with emails these days - but he replied immediately, like always! Good luck to you all (:
  20. Hey, Has anyone heard back from Rutgers as yet? I was also interviewed by Profs Goldstein and Magana earlier this week. I know they said that it would be the end of Feb before we'd hear back from them but just asking! Nerves :s Good luck everyone!
  21. I meant to thank eucalyptus. Clearly I am a newbie here (or like it says, "decaf").
  22. Thanks for sharing your experiences- this is great feedback. The interview is tomorrow at 8 a.m. Espresso Shot- special thanks to you for answering all my queries so well.
  23. Thanks TallChai! I will follow that thread too. Good luck with your interview! I hope we both do well. M.
  24. I am an international student with a Master's degree from a U.S. school. I just got an email regarding a phone interview with the anthropology adcom of Rutgers University. I have applied for the PhD anthro program there. I have never had this experience before so I just want to know what I should expect. They have indicated that the interview will be 15-20 mins long. What sort of questions will they ask? How specific will they be? Will they be right out of the material I submitted as part of my application (say smth from my SOP or writing sample) or will be much wider or as I suspect, both? How should I "introduce" myself? What are they looking for in a candidate? How familiar must I be with the faculty's work? Just anything you guys can help me with! Also, how many people are usually interviewed? Does this mean I am "pretty close" to being accepted or is this quite preliminary? Thanks!
