veiltender Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I saw that someone posted an acceptance to the Religion PhD at Princeton on the Board. I don't know if all the Religion waitees saw it, so I thought I would mention it on here. Good luck to those who applied to Princeton!
GSStudent Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I am the one who got into Princeton's program in Religion in Late Antiquity. A prof emailed me Wed night to inform me of the good news. Just waiting on Harvard now!
sarah4153 Posted February 22, 2008 Author Posted February 22, 2008 Did you, by chance, land an interview with the UVA faculty? I got to meet Jones, Hart, and sit in on a class with Mathews. They are a very cordial bunch. No, I haven't heard anything. I have a friend who also applied to UVA and he hasn't heard anything either.
Svartsven Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Sarah, Did you, by chance, land an interview with the UVA faculty? I got to meet Jones, Hart, and sit in on a class with Mathews. They are a very cordial bunch. Your comment is somewhat confusing. Are you saying the faculty contacted you for an interview after you submitted your application, or that you arranged a campus visit? These are potentially two very different things. I'm still waiting to hear from UVA, Indiana, Syracuse, and Iowa. I've also applied to a number of philosophy programs.
cmmimg Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Philmajor--No, I don't really know how Chicago makes decisions, though from what I've heard generally, their internal applicants aren't given any particularly special treatment, though certainly a recommendation from someone deciding admissions must do something to help.
Stud. Theol. Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Sorry, that was confusing. No, I wasn't invited for an interview after I applied. I arranged a campus visit before I sent my application. I was just wondering if anyone else had had any sort of direct interaction with the faculty and might share their impressions. My own impression is that it's a very good environment in which to do theology (my own focus). Each of the individuals I met with even expressed a sort of optimism/excitement about both the work that they do and the graduate progam, generally. In interacting with some individuals at other programs I got the impression that this is somewhat rare. I'm just very high on UVA and, so, pretty hopeful. Also, if anyone did land a post-application invite, I wouldn't mind hearing how that went. UVA required our apps in early December so I guess I'm antsy to know either way.
Stud. Theol. Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Svartsven, What is your area of focus? Philosophy of religion, philosophical theology, something in that arena? I am hoping to do something within that blurry arena myself. I applied to a number of top Ph.D. programs in philosophy 2 years ago and was shut out. (I aimed a bit too high, apparently. And my focus on phil. theol. or phil of religion probably didn't make many people in those philosophy programs jump for joy.) This time around I am focusing on religion/theology programs that are friendly (or at least not opposed) to projects in philosophical theology. If you're looking at similar topics, what programs/people have you focused on?
Svartsven Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 No, I wasn't invited for an interview after I applied. I arranged a campus visit before I sent my application. Thanks for clearing this up. Svartsven, What is your area of focus? Philosophy of religion, philosophical theology, something in that arena? I think my interests would be classified under philosophical theology. Though, more specifically, I'm interested in Post-Kantian religious thought, especially Kierkegaard (I'm writing my MA thesis on SK). I also have an interest in James, Barth, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein. If you're looking at similar topics, what programs/people have you focused on? I'm not sure how much our interests overlap, but I've applied to the following programs. Religious Studies/Religion: UVA, Indiana, Syracuse, and Iowa Philosophy: UC Riverside, Georgetown, New Mexico, Fordham, and U of Calgary

deus_absconditus Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Thanks for creating this thread. I am going crazy waiting for answers. I have applied to 7 doctoral programs in early Christianity and have only heard back from Duke. Rejected so early! I am waiting to hear from Princeton, Yale, Harvard (PhD, ThD), UNC - Chapel Hill, and UCSB. GRE Q: 690 GRE V: 710 GPA: 3.9 (master's) I applied to Duke last year and got the rejection letter at the end of January. They have a huge chopping block!

deus_absconditus Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 I haven't seen anything about Marquette, Rice, Loyola, Villanova, or Princeton Theological Seminary on the forum yet. Anyone heard anything?
ace98cc7 Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 Has anyone heard anything from BC or Fordham yet??
cmmimg Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 ace98cc7, Someone in my masters program got into Fordham a week or so ago. It may just be the early short list acceptances.
tiredofrejection Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 To the question about BC, I was rejected by mail two weeks ago. I live in Boston so it got to me faster than most, but I am surprised you haven't heard yet. Count so far: Accepted: Graduate Theological Union (waiting to hear on funding) Rejected: BC, (UCLA, UC Berkely, & Stanford Sociology Programs) Waitlisted: (UC Irvine Sociology) Waiting: Georgetown, Claremont, (Villanova Philosophy with a Theology crossover)
sarah4153 Posted February 26, 2008 Author Posted February 26, 2008 One of these days we'll start to hear. Of course, it might be July by then ...
eggman Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Tiredofrejection, what area did you apply to at BC? I'm still waiting to hear from them. I think the History area sends out notifications sooner than the Systematics area. Not sure how quick Ethics and Bible are. To the question about Fordham, somebody in my MA program was accepted a couple of weeks ago too. Regarding Notre Dame, they just had their interviews this weekend. Lastly, I called Vanderbilt and was told that the admissions committee has given itself until the end of March but they hope to send notifications within the next couple of weeks.
deus_absconditus Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Just found out that I got wait-listed at Loyola for the Christian Ethics PhD.
rastaman Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Just to let everyone know, I just got an email this morning that I have been accepted to the Religion PhD program at Harvard(not the ThD).Official letters with financial aid stuff will be coming next week.
rastaman Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Also to let you know that INDIANA will be mailing the letters either by the end of this week or early next week,I was told by the secretary.
tiredofrejection Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I applied to the ethics program at BC and found out mid February. I forgot I also applied to the peace studies (& sociology) program at Notre Dame. Anybody know when they are sending those out? The deadline was a very late February 1st.
Shayna Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I haven't heard from anywhere yet. However, my friend who teaches at Emory called in late January to tell me that I did "not make the list" and I know Notre Dame has their visitor's weekend in late Feb (last weekend, perhaps) and I didn't get invited. So I know I'm down two. I also applied to NYU's Hebrew and Judaic Studies program and University of Pennsylvania, in addition to two separate programs at University of Toronto. I know that the committee at NYU didn't meet yet or have just met. According to the secretary, they hope to have decisions mailed out by this Friday (Feb 29). Okay - I can handle that. But I haven't heard a word at ALL from UPenn. (UofT is Canadian and on a different schedule, so it could be April or later until I hear from them. Oy!) This is my 2nd year applying, and if I don't make it this year, I don't think I'm going. BTW, I did get into McGill last year, and deferred, but the aid is so terrible, I don't think we (as in me and my husband and 3 kids) can afford to make it work. We haven't crossed it off as an option, but it seems unlikely.
tingbaring Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 I spoke with the secretary at Princeton Theological Seminary and she said that they will mail out their acceptance and rejection letters next week.
Stud. Theol. Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 Anyone have an update on Claremont or UVA? If anyone else is fairly certain that this is your last year to apply, I wish you the best. I will know within a few weeks whether the trajectory of my life goes through academic terrain or whether I'll just be some guy in his kitchen cooking macaroni and cheese. (I think of the non-academic life as more-or-less standing in one's kitchen cooking macaroni and cheese... I guess I'll need to get over that image either way I go.)

I think someone earlier in this thread said Virginia would be sending out letters late February / early March, so we should know pretty soon. For what it's worth, I was in a PhD program for two years, left and spent seven years with the macaroni and cheese (and work and family, etc.), and now I'm looking to return. The macaroni and cheese years haven't been so bad.
