Hello,

I know this is a common post but I believe I am a somewhat non-traditional candidate and was wondering what the community believed my chances of admission are:

  • School: Big 10 (Graduating Fall 2019)
  • Majors: Economics and Statistics (Extensive Coursework in Math and Business) (Began as a business school student before deciding I enjoyed economics more)
  • GPA / Grades: 3.62
  • Math Grades:
  • Calc (1-3) : A,C,C
  • Intro Proofs: C
  • Linear Algebra : Anticipating B
  • Advanced Probability : Anticipating A or B
  • Intro to Python: Anticipating A
  • Will have a lot more statistics and data science (think R based) courses by graduation)

  • Econ Grades:

  • Intro Micro / Macro : A, A

  • Intermediate Micro: A

  • International : A

  • Econometrics: Anticipating A

  • Will have advanced econometrics, intermediate macro, advanced micro, a research seminar by graduation

  • Non-traditional Experience:

  • Summer Internship as a Tax Consultant at Top 10 Accounting Firm

  • Interning at Insurance Company in Actuarial Science this upcoming summer

  • Career Services Consultant

  • Applying for Research position for next fall

  • Goals Unsure of exact focus but am interested (thus far) in micro theory as well as applications in economics to real world problems using data. I do not intend to go for a position in academia. I am interested in ding a PhD because I am not done learning and want to delve deep into a topic I believe can explain much of the world. Post PhD (theoretically) I would be extremely happy with a role in industry or teaching at a small non-research school.

  • I believe my background is non-traditional as I have extensive experience in industry but little academic experience. I think my biggest weakness is my grades in Mathematics. I intend to take two more classes (Real Analysis and ODEs) and attempt to do as best (Likely B's) as I can in order to positively signal to admissions that I can handle quantitative coursework. I am hoping doing this along with obtaining some research position would make my profile stronger. I am interested in schools that are unranked (NIU, Wayne State University) or at least outside of the top 30 (UIC). (Understand academia is out of the cards for me) How do you all think I would fare in admissions to these institution?
