errrrr Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 So, I've been accepted to a few program: JHU, UCI, UW and UMD for Applied Math. My interests are math bio/bioinformatics/compuational bio (anything really mathy and bio - maybe even more scientific computing or pde and bio) I am still waiting to hear back from 5 programs - harvard, nyu, brown, cornell, bu.... but I will assume if they havent' responded by now they don't want me? Is this the case?? I was wondering of the top four which would be the best to go to for my interests if funding wasn't an issue?? Funding is an issue as UW doesn't offer me anything but I might get an RAship... Thank you for the help!
robben Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 brown should be done, check your embark online. JHU is the weakest of those by far. I'd take UMD in a heartbeat. did you apply for cornell applied math or statistical science?
errrrr Posted March 8, 2010 Author Posted March 8, 2010 brown should be done, check your embark online. JHU is the weakest of those by far. I'd take UMD in a heartbeat. did you apply for cornell applied math or statistical science? I applied to Brown's computational biology and applied math. the computational biology hasn't respond yet... I applied to Cornell's computational biology which should have trickled over to applied math if they didn't accept me... :-(
errrrr Posted March 8, 2010 Author Posted March 8, 2010 (edited) but really umd is best of those four? what is second best? i would have expected johns hopkins to be good at math bio :-( oh well Edited March 8, 2010 by errrrr
robben Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 (edited) I think UMD > UW > UCI > JHU for applied umd strong collaboration with STAT and MATH and their faculty is really climbing. uw very prestigious and selective i don't know anything about their computation math seems like the next best thing out of the 4, I do know however that they hold a very well regarded probability seminar and they have several members who were editors of saim probability journal UCI part of their math dept and very strong in cs/ece so JHU probably smallest department and the whitehead building is very very crappy lol, you're right that jhu is all things natural science but i have no idea if they have good collaboration with bio or a track in computational bio, they started a masters in finance not too long ago and they are mostly working on that. BongRips69 Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 The OP private messaged me, but I'll reply here. I don't know much about biology research. Don't actually know much about UCI, applied based primarily on proximity to family. Sort of wish I would've tried for one of Caltech's applied/mechanics programs. Did you apply to JHU AMS or their biostat program? There is some bio stuff in the AMS department. Check out the image processing group: http://iacl.ece.jhu.edu/ Check the AMSC webpage for their bio group. If you've been accepted to these programs, you should really direct your questions to them. They accepted you... they obviously want you there! Email potential professors and current graduate students. You may want to direct your messages through the graduate coordinator.
errrrr Posted March 10, 2010 Author Posted March 10, 2010 (edited) Okay - now add Harvard into the mix... where would you go? applied math (school of engineering) Edited March 10, 2010 by errrrr
sapling Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 Okay - now add Harvard into the mix... where would you go? applied math (school of engineering) Do you mean that you have been admitted into Harvard? If so, congratulations to you! I do not know much about AppMath[Harvard], but I guess it is also a good choice. Anyway, ''Harvard'' is a big name. UMD is also very strong in mathematical biology and scientific computing. There are so many faculty members there, with wide spectrum of almost every domains in applied math. UW is very strong in pure math, but not so strong in applied math, as far as I know. Brown is also definately a good place for PDE and computational biology. My advisor once strongly recommended me to DAM at Brown. But I failed. hehe~ Good luck to you
