Postbib Yeshuist Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Anyone doing this? I know of a few at the school where I'm doing my Th.M., but curious about other stories. How do you do it? Where do you live? Budgeting concerns? etc etc etc. Anything at all will be helpful. (We have an 18 month-old and my wife wants to continue staying home and raising our cooler-by-the-day son while I focus on a Ph.D. )
Tiffany Bell Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Hm, I guess it would depend on the area and the stipend. My fiance got a generous stipend ($1400/month) plus $23,000 the first year. We're going to be moving to a much cheaper town with lower rent and food costs from the city we live in now. I feel as though this will be more than enough to support us both. However, we haven't thrown a baby in to the mix. Good luck!!
africanhistoryphd Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 (edited) Hey there. Well, we're going to try and do it on a stipend, and just to up the ante, we've got a two year old and a baby on the way! My wife will probably pick up a few hours a week (she's a nurse), and I'll hang out with the boy (soon to be boys). I love time with him, and she could use time out of the house and finds work rewarding. My guess is we'll take out some student loans (hopefully only fully subsidized ones) to cover miscellaneous costs. Many well wishes and the best of luck to you! Family + school=wonderful insanity. EDIT: Sorry realize I didn't answer your question. I'm leaning towards Michigan. Ann Arbor isn't as cheap as the rest of MI, but it's not too bad. We're selling our house and cutting back on expenses like crazy. Hopefully we'll be a lean mean budget machine by the time we're through. I love the phrase "cooler-by-the-day son". Isn't that the truth. Every day he's more fun, more bizarre and more wonderful. Edited March 9, 2010 by africanhistoryphd

How's the house-selling going? We're in the same boat and I really dread trying to sell a ouse in a down market with 6 months to school starting
