Anyone on here coming to visit Umich this weekend for musicology accepted students? I'm a student there now (though taking a terminal Master's and moving on) and I was just wondering.

Hi. I applied to the Ethnomusicology PhD program there, but haven't heard anything back yet. I am checking website but no change either. Do you think it means that I'm out? It was my top choice and I'll be sad, but I just want to know the result...

I'm in the same position as you, troco: ethno phD and I haven't heard anything, positive or negative. No one else has posted an acceptance. I called the department, but the admin assistant I spoke to was really unhelpful. She told me I'll be notified "at some point" and if I want anything more specific, to contact the professor in charge of ethno admissions.

We already sent out our acceptances and are now in the process of narrowing down the list for funding. That's lame that you didn't get notifications, but not surprising given the state of our administration. I would still contact your POI. I had a friend who never heard back from Indiana and it turns out he was accepted, they just forgot to notify him. Who knows, maybe the same thing happened in your cases....

Good suggestion. I emailed my POI and will post any information he gives me. I hope Michigan only did acceptances for musicology. I think they have a great ethno department and would love for it to be an option.

Musicology and ethnomusicology make decisions together regarding admissions. I do know that we have one ethno student visiting on Thursday who has been accepted, but there is always the possibility that she will turn down the offer. But I would wait to see what your POI has to say. Do you mind my asking who it is?

vikkilynn and angesa01,

Thank you for the information. That is surprising that they did not send us any notification.

I will send an email to my POI and let you know what I get.

I am interested in East Asian music, and I thought U of Mich would be a great place for it...

I emailed to my POI, and he wrote me back:

"I will forward your inquiry to Professor Stefano Mengozzi, who chairs the grad/admission committee,

and who will send you the official decision regarding your application. I will also take a look at your file. "

I'm not sure what this means...

It sounds good! At least he's taking a look at your file instead of "I will disregard your file after realizing we don't need anyone in your subfield." I emailed Mengozzi: he's historical musicology and I think theory also, but hopefully he has a soft spot for us ethnomusicologists. If accepted, do you think you would go to Michigan?

It totally depends on the funding.

I am also accepted to MA program at Wisconsin-Madison. I know Michigan is bigger school but I want to decide after visiting both.

The professors at Madison were sooo nice that I would also love to go there if I have funding.

How about you??

I ran into Mengozzi today and he was reviewing a stack of admissions files. It seems that they're still going through them, so that's good news, I think. A fourth accepted student is visiting us on Monday, but I'm not sure if he/she is ethno or historical.

I applied to Madison too (Ph.D), but don't think I'll end up going. They told me they wouldn't have financial offers until April 9th or later (I have to have my decisions finalized by the 5th). Plus I heard that their funding is spotty at best. For an MA, though, it's def. a good option. The funding is probably comparable to Michigan for those who get it and it seems that there is a better working relationship between students and faculty (which we honestly don't have here). (FYI the funding at Michigan is pretty bad right now....it's a huge point of contention amongst us grad students and I honestly don't know that we'll even be able to fund the usual 2 incoming first years this year.......)

Thanks for the info, Vikkilynn. Funding everywhere seems like it's down this year. If you don't mind sharing, did you go right for your MA after undergrad?

I applied to both MA and Ph.D. programs my last year of undergrad, but also applied for a Fulbright grant. I ended up getting the Fulbright and accepted at Michigan, which I deferred for a year. After my Fulbright I came back to the states, started the Ph.D. at Michigan, then reapplied to programs this year and decided to opt for the imbedded Master's (which I will finish in April). I'd suggest taking a Ph.D. track that's funded over an MA. You can always opt out of the Ph.D., take the terminal Master's, and reapply. That way you get a funded Master's (regular Master's programs aren't often funded) and will have a better chance of getting into a top school your second time around. Seems like a pain because you'll probably end up having to redo some course-work, but in the end I think it's worth it. Good luck!

Thanks for your advice! If it doesn't work out well, I will try again next year.

By the way, the website said that they made the decision and contact us soon... good luck angesa01!

Wow, good luck to you too! Would you mind telling me where to find that info? The Michigan site is constantly freezing for me and it would be a huge comfort to read the actual words saying they will contact us soon. Thanks!

I cannot see the website right now, but you know that the page where we can check our application states, right?

Next to the link of View Credential, there was a new link like My Decision.

Ohhh I'm nervous!
