sapling
Hello, I guess it may sound a bit strange that I applied three different kinds of PhD programs: AppMath@CMU ( Including Operations Research group), Operations esearch & Industial Engineering @Columbia, Statistics@Chicago. Well, I admit that I am a person with very broad interest. Anyway, I hope to make up the final decision as soon as possible; because I am afraid those students in the waiting list will lose opportunity because of my hesitation. May you give me some advice in comparing these offers and schools? Thanks. Edited March 9, 2010 by sapling
floffel
The only program of those that I am familiar with is Statistics at Chicago. While that is a great department, it might not be a great fit for someone who is also considering Operations Research/Industrial Engineering. The U of C Stat department is among the more theory-focused of the top Stat programs, and the research applications tend to focus on the social sciences (primarily econ), business, and genetics of course. The University as a whole does not have many people in Applied Math, and though I can't speak for IE specifically there is virtually zero interest in Engineering throughout the institution.
