mpa2012 Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Has anyone heard from Evans yet? Also, does anyone have an opinion on the program? It's fairly well ranked by USNWR, and the second year in-state tuition would make it comparatively affordable, but I really don't know much about it. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
fadeindreams Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 ... the second year in-state tuition would make it comparatively affordable... Could you tell me more about this? This is the first time I've heard of it. I went into the application process with Evans being my absolute top choice. I ended up applying there, Ford at Michigan, SIPA and Korbel. I am very anxiously awaiting their decision because at this point I've gotten accepted to Korbel and have yet to hear back from SIPA or Ford. Evans, from researching as much as I could and speaking with a recruiter or two from there, seemed like the best fit for me academically. The results search shows that last year the decisions went out in the 4th week of March (around the 25th). We probably have at least another two weeks of waiting. I would be pleasantly surprised if they sped it up a bit this year and got the decisions out in the next week.
mpa2012 Posted March 9, 2010 Author Posted March 9, 2010 Could you tell me more about this? This is the first time I've heard of it. I honestly haven't looked into it much, but I met an Admin Rep at one of the Grad School Fairs who said that if you can establish legal residency in Washington, tuition is something like 13 or 14K for the entire year. Sorry I don't have more information than that.
fadeindreams Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Called Evans and they said they will be sending decisions out starting today or tomorrow via post. They will be sending decisions through next week. If you are given aid not tied to the FAFSA then you will be notified along with your decision. Via post...really? *sigh*
fadeindreams Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 (edited) Admissions with aid starting now (4:00 PST). Source is my wife who just got a full research assistantship (RA) via email. Crazy...$1500 stipend and insurance paid a month. I hope they admit me too. Otherwise, well, that'd be super sad. Edited March 18, 2010 by fadeindreams
mpa2012 Posted March 18, 2010 Author Posted March 18, 2010 Wow, congrats to your wife, that's amazing. Fingers crossed for the rest of us!
mpa2012 Posted March 19, 2010 Author Posted March 19, 2010 Just got my acceptance email, but no word on funding. And the waiting continues...
djad206 Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 I recieved an acceptance email yesterday as well. However there was no mention of funding in the email. It only mentioned the open house April 1st Curious. Did funding info come in a seperate email, snail mail? Congrats to those accepted.
fadeindreams Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Curious. Did funding info come in a seperate email, snail mail? Via email in a personal message prior to the general acceptance emails. I received only the general acceptance email. Not sure if this means I am out of the running for funding in the future. We'll wait and see.
djad206 Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Via email in a personal message prior to the general acceptance emails. I received only the general acceptance email. Not sure if this means I am out of the running for funding in the future. We'll wait and see. I see. Thanks for the reply Even though I have also been accepted to the Humphrey with funding, the amount in loans I would have to take at the Hump for living expenses equals the amount I would have to take at the Evans if they offer no aid. This is interesting
Pompeii Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Just thought I'd bump this topic since I'm sure there are a couple other people out there who, like me, are looking at Evans for the coming school year (2013-2014). Does anyone have any insight into the financial award process? I was accepted and was told that they're still deciding awards. I haven't heard anything since (this was about a week ago). Feel free to post your own questions and we can get a discussion going!
muro0901 Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 I am in the same boat and I don't think it bodes well for us. There are some who were admitted and immediately informed that they received some funding (although I have heard it wasn't much). I will still patiently wait and see, but I don't think much if anything is coming our way. Because of this I will most likely be attending USC since they offered me a 1/2 tuition scholarship.
Pompeii Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Hmm that's what I was afraid of. Nothing to do but wait and see I suppose. I'll try calling tomorrow to see if they can tell me anything, and let you know what they say.
Kitten Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 I was sent an acceptance email on March 13th with the funding offer in the same email: "This award will be paid out at $5,000 per year over two academic years (Autumn-Spring) beginning Autumn Quarter 2013, and again in Autumn Quarter 2014. Please note that should you seek and accept a research, teaching, staff assistantship position, or any other employment at the University of Washington that provides a tuition waiver (including tuition exemption for employees) and stipend, that award will supersede this offer." I am currently located in South Korea, although not an international student. Perhaps that's why they decided to email instead of sending by post. Also, does UW generally not give large funding offers because its tuition is relatively inexpensive?
CharKel27 Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 I was accepted via email with the line about aid being an ongoing process and I would receive an email if I was selected, but I heard from another accepted student that their original acceptance email included the $5,000/year award in it; so it seems to me if no aid offer was in your first email, you weren't selected for first round funding. I emailed asking if they were going to have a second round of funding but haven't heard back.
harrista Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Have any internationals heard aye or nay from Evans? Seems strange that no internationals have gotten in according to the results page. Obviously I'm not getting an offer if I still haven't heard, but I'd like to know for sure so I can debrief and and thank my referees. I emailed admissions last week but they haven't replied.
skemp Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 I was accepted to the MPA program with $5k per year, but just decided on USC. Couldn't pass up the money, and I think it'll actually be a better fit for my professional interests. Good luck to everyone who's going to/staying in Seattle!

I'm an international applicant and I received my acceptance email dated March 21. So keep your fingers crossed. Its not all done. But they better give me full funding, otherwise............
bluestskies Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 (edited) I wonder if the initial funding letter had to do with the priority application deadline. I remember that there was a Dec. 15th and Jan. 15th deadline with the former giving applicants priority funding. Edited March 27, 2013 by bluestskies
bluestskies Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 I was sent an acceptance email on March 13th with the funding offer in the same email: "This award will be paid out at $5,000 per year over two academic years (Autumn-Spring) beginning Autumn Quarter 2013, and again in Autumn Quarter 2014. Also, does UW generally not give large funding offers because its tuition is relatively inexpensive? Anybody hear anything regarding awards? Also this last bit of your email is what I'm kind of interested in: in this context, what does supersede mean? So like if you were awarded a TA position, that money would be used *first* and this would only be allotted if you still had a balance, or would it deny you the use of the $5k award?
