NervousNellie Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Looking very likely I'll be headed to Yale in the fall. Anyone else on here going to New Haven? I've been accepted to the div. school but have not figured out if the funding is feasible yet. I probably won't move to New Haven in any case, but rather commute from where I am in MA. But would love to hear from others headed Yale's way!

What are you planning on doing? Any suggestions? I was planning on checking out craigslist.

SomeoneTakeMe Posted March 19, 2010 Author Posted March 19, 2010 We should plan a GradCafe meet up in the fall !
robuchon Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 Hi everyone! I'll be joining the MCGD track in BBS. Anyone else here also in BBS? What is everyone planning to do about housing? I'm a little conflicted about whether I want to live in a grad "dorm" but it seems like the easiest way to meet people? What do you guys think.

polipsychstudent Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Hi everyone! I will be attending Yale in the fall for psychology and I am very excited:) I decided to live on campus (when I visited, I was told by students this is a good option for those who want to get to know other grad students outside their department). I applied to live in HGS (Hall of Graduate Studies), which I heard is the best. I was also told not to live in HHH (Helen Hadley Hall). But for those who want to live off campus, the East Rock neighborhood is very nice, and seemed close enough to the campus to walk.
barbarian Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 I'll be going for math. I'm inclined to go for the grad dorm (the price is right) but I might move out later if everyone's doing it.
Jestem Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Hi everyone! I'm accepted to the School of Art and am moving to NH in August from Taipei. I too been looking for a place these days but it seems like a difficult task especially when I can't be there and see the place for myself. I'm wondering if grad apartments open to single students like me or they're for students with a family? I don't want to stay in the dorm but I'm definitely up for meeting new friends. God! give me a decent place (with decent rate)!
mak Posted April 11, 2010 Posted April 11, 2010 Hi everyone! I'll be joining the MCGD track in BBS. Anyone else here also in BBS? What is everyone planning to do about housing? I'm a little conflicted about whether I want to live in a grad "dorm" but it seems like the easiest way to meet people? What do you guys think. Howdy, I'm going for BBS as well, Microbiology track. I think I would prefer to live in an apartment in East Rock, but I'm also considering the dorms because they are closer to the train station (my boyfriend lives in NYC...). I haven't officially accepted yet but I heard that current students might be able to help hook up newbies with apartments that they may be vacating. The dorms are probably better for meeting people in other types of programs; I think that there will probably be a lot of BBS events and such to help us get to know each other.
indianacat Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 I just officially accepted! Hardest decision I ever made but my visit at the end of March pushed it - it absolutely poured with rain the whole time but I felt quite at home there (perhaps that's the reason - I am from England..). I tried to explore the entire city during my two days there in regards to living options but the rain was a hindrance (I mean, I went through two umbrellas in one day, it was that brutal). Just based on speaking to current students, however, I will avoid student housing and was quite heartened to see some students living in very nice, and cheap, private rentals. I'm happy to discuss what I discovered on my limited trip with people here who don't have the opportunity to see New Haven for themselves! And anyone else going for Anthropology (or archaeology) of any kind?
mouse Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 I will second the hearsay about avoiding grad student housing. We went on an apartment tour during interviews and the one person we visited who lived in the dorms seemed quite eager to get out. I was fortunate in that some of my friends from college will also be living in New Haven, so four of us are renting a privately owned house on campus.
sandouka Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 Hey everyone, I'm curious if anyone has had any luck in finding housing? My search isn't turning up anything too exciting and I'm hoping its not too late...
magic Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Hey everyone, I'm curious if anyone has had any luck in finding housing? My search isn't turning up anything too exciting and I'm hoping its not too late... Where did you search? I cannot come until orientation week, so I think it's useless for me to search right now. (Bad idea to sign lease without seeing place first.) Is anybody else in this situation? I applied to 1 property from Yale Grad Housing by no reply to my application yet.

I will also be leaving it to the last minute to look around and find somewhere before school starts. I didn't realise before that my visa (international student) won't allow me to enter the country before August 1st - which is a shame, as I had this wonderful road trip/ settling in period planned!
toon Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 Hi guys!! I see many people are having headaches over housing... So am I... HAha.. I will be in Fall in BBS, doing computational biology and bioinfo. One of us started a group in Facebook (group name: Dorms are for Freshmen! Yale Graduate Roommate Matcher 2010) to help us link up potential roommates. So please do use that resource and see what turns out... Anybody knows about which neighborhood is safer? Thanks!
Gaeta Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 Hi guys! I'll be pursuing an MA in Stats this year. Very excited as I could not have dreamt of a better school to be at! irockhard, I'm also going to be at HGS. I can pretty much sleep through anything and I figured if the construction is bothering me when I need to study, I can just head to a library. I think you made the right choice . Anyone else joining us?
Theoretical2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Well, in fact, I think HGS is a very good place, my first choice was a room in HGS, but I did not get it, so I am going to 254 p street.

indianacat Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 I have a question..not long to go now and in my pre-arrival organisation I was getting all my finances in order (ugh), checked my Yale admit letter for my exact stipend amount - and realised they are 'pleased to offer a minimum level of support of $26,000' per year. I haven't received any other correspondence with an exact figure as far as I can see - does anyone know if I should take this amount as very close to the mark or maybe I'm going to get a a very happy surprise (I know, I can dream though). I feel like this is something I should have received confirmation of! Is everyone else's package as vague?
