What to Do if You Are Waitlisted?

I'm sure this has been discussed around here, but I can't find the discussion anywhere,

My very dear friend has been wait listed at her top choice program, and I was wondering if anyone had advice of what she could do to increase her chances. (She lives in the city that this school is in.)

Email her POI and graduate secretary and find out if they have been ranked yet. Also, in the email to the POI, update the POI on anything that has happened since the app has been turned in.

This is for English programs? I would go to the DGS rather than the POI, since that person may or may not have anything to do with admissions this year.

I have been emailing the contact to say I would be remiss if I didn't let them know I was keenly interested in the program, and asking if there are any additional materials I can submit to help them in their ranking I offer things like teaching portfolios, teaching philosphies, and any recent honors I have.
