Chances of getting into SLP Graduate Program

Question

Posted

So I'm starting this process a bit early but it better to be early than to late. I am just nervous with my GPA and GRE scores that I will never be accepted to graduate school. I started as a Dance Major at a community college in South Jersey. I eventually changed majors to Liberal Arts with a Speech Concentration. Then that program was cut because of low enrollment. When this happened I became a Liberal Arts and Science Major and graduated with Associates after 3 1/2 years. Then took a semester off and transferred to a University in the Fall of 2015. I just graduated with my Bachelors of Health Science, Pre-Communication Disorders.

When I graduated from the University my overall GPA is a 3.34 and my major GPA is a 3.41. I was just wondering what my chances are of being excepted into a graduate school. I plan to retake GREs and my scores were a 138 in Quantitative and 139 in Qualitative and for the written it was a 2.5. These are terrible scores but I was taking a chemistry exam the same day and was not aware I could cancel or postpone my test.

I also have worked 2 jobs to put myself through school during these last few years. I could of done so much better but the past is the past. I do have a very well rounded resume including working as a Substitute Teacher, Nannying, Research Assistant, Notetaker for hard of hearing students, Dance teacher, Youth Theater Choreographer, and also volunteer work with a local hospital.

I have also worked retail for the last few years. Any advice or thoughts on my situation would be greatly appreciated. I have also been making a list on where I would like to apply - Old Dominion University, Stockton University, Salus University (PA), University of Delaware, University of central Florida, Nova, NYU(online program), Valdosta in Georgia, Howard University, La Salle, West Chester, Etc

I wouldn't lose hope if I were you. Your GPA is within the average range so it's not a deal breaker. You will have to re-take the GRE's and shoot for at least the 150s and a 4 in writing (totally doable if you are able to take a month or so and really study). Most schools won't even consider you with a 3. I know someone who was accepted into NYU with a 3.5 but she had an impressive GPA and a very high qualitative score. They will also put a lot of weight on your LORs and your personal statement. It might be worth working with a professional on your PS since your history is a bit "all over the map" (which is totally fine! don't get me wrong), but you might have trouble coming up with a succinct and compelling PS simply because you aren't one of those who "always knew speech was your calling" (or maybe you did, sorry if I'm wrong on that. That's just the impression I'm getting from what you wrote). My undergrad GPA was 3.02 (out of field), which is terrible, but I was like you, "well rounded". Plus my GRE scores were 152 quant, 161 qual and 4.5 so I guess that was good enough. I got into NYU (online) and still waiting to hear back from a few more schools, fingers crossed. I hope that helps. Good luck!
