Congratulations! I graduated with an MA from UHM. I don't know anything about your department but there are two main considerations you should think about before studying there. One is that the UH system's funding (and overall the state budget in Hawaii) has been severely cut in the past year or two, so try to find out exactly what sort of funding you would be given before committing. Also, keep in mind the cost of living in Hawaii is hellishly high. My friends in the geo department had about $1000/month plus health insurance, but that grand does not go very far. Expect to pay an absolute minimum of $650/month for shared accommodation, and you will pay the country's highest rates for food and gas.

If it is your dream to study in Hawaii, by all means go for it and don't let anyone's opinion stop you! The weather is amazing, the beaches are exquisite, Hawaiian culture is awesome, and you CAN do a lot of things for free and/or very cheap to entertain yourself. However, I found the three years I lived there somewhat stressful as I was paying out-of-state tuition for two of those years and worked 2-3 jobs. If you are mentally prepared for the high costs then you won't have constant sticker shock. And, UH is always hurting for money so infrastructure and resources in your department might be a bit lacking (and in mathematics that may not really be too big a deal, right?)

Good luck with your funding and I hope it all works out for you!

I've received notice of funding; I'm receiving a minimum of $1500 per month, with a possible increase to $2500. If I attend, I'll want to live off campus; should this be enough to have a decent 2 bedroom apartment and possibly start saving? Also, I'd hope to live close to campus (i.e., biking distance) is there anywhere in particular that I should look. Online listings would be a plus :)

You guys make me soooo jealous. Buying a one-way ticket to the Big Island and teaching high school math there until I died was my backup plan if PhD didn't pan out. ;)

Aloha!

BTW Multiple, I think you'll find that even $2500/mo will make saving difficult. Hawai'i ain't exactly known for being cheap...

Hi, first post..

I was accepted to the Second Language Studies program, but without a lot of funding: $3500/semester tuition scholarship. GA-ships aren't typically given to first semester students so I'm kinda of really hoping I can get one.

Is it fairly easy to find part-time jobs in the area that would at least cover the cost of rent while I go to school part-time until I get some more substantial funding? Taking out loans isn't a huge issue for me, but I'd like to keep the amount fairly low..
