future_is_scary Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 I am getting ready to apply for the second time, but this time I really want to make sure I apply to the right programs and that they'll compliment my existing research interests. I'd broadly define my research interests as how the state responds to maintain its hegemonic interests, both in maintaining white supremacy and in the coming climate crisis. My interests also include policing and the criminal justice system as a system of white supremacy and the role the media plays in these systems. Any advice y'all can give in this process would be wonderful!
high_hopes Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 Your interests don't overlap much with my field of study, but I would say apply at the universities where you find at least a small concentration of faculty working on the broader issues that you are interested in and some of them publishing on topics that fit well with what you're aiming to do. What do you think went wrong the first time around? Also, here are two interesting blog posts on how to assess whether a program is worth applying to: https://orgtheory.wordpress.com/2007/01/30/grad-skool-rulz-3-choosing-the-grad-skool/ https://orgtheory.wordpress.com/2012/04/10/how-to-choose-a-graduate-program/

Thank you for those links ^_^ The general consensus of my mentors is that my application wasn’t up to snuff in regards to my math GRE scores. But I recently started working with a tutor to bump those up so hopefully that wont be an issue this time around.
