woolfie Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I'm currently falling in love with the program at Boulder, but I'm trying to see if there is any hope for funding. I don't have an MA, which I see is required for the phd program that is fully funded. But I see no mention of funding for MA students, only links to the graduate school financial aid pages. This is probably a bad sign, but I have read on other websites that Colorado has a 'terminal, funded MA program" though I'm not seeing any evidence of that. Did or has anyone ever gotten into UCB for a master's with funding?

wintergirl Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 (edited) I'm currently falling in love with the program at Boulder, but I'm trying to see if there is any hope for funding. I am really glad to hear this since UCB's going to be one of my top choices when I apply for PhDs in a couple of years. I missed their masters app deadline this year (didn't even think about applying until late December, when I was basically told my job might be cut), but it worked out well since I applied and got a fellowship for a masters in my specialized area at another school. Hope everything works out for you, too!! Edited March 20, 2010 by bespeckled
Enzian Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 I'm wondering similar things about Boulder's Comp Lit program since, as far as fit goes, it's far and away my first choice. The website is actually fairly helpful (departmental funding only through TAs, gives some basic numbers) but if anybody accepted to the program (specifically the MA but either is welcome) this year wanted to share their funding specs (here or PM), I'd offer them a great big e-high ten.
EKPhrase Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 All, I had a phone convo with a faculty member from the PhD program at CU in English, where I am waitlisted. I have posted this in other places (or at least the gist), and at the end of the day, funding in Colorado is bad. As a PhD student, only one of six cohort admits, I would be eligible to teach two classes for tuition remission and stipend. Two classes, at the PhD level -- and I am quoting the prof -- "exploitive." If you teach one class, you get 5 credit hours of tuition remission. If CU is your dream school, consider this - after the MA, it's a short program - only six classes. But it takes as long as a program that requires ten because you are either teaching too much and can only carry a load of 2 classes per semester or you are paying out of pocket to free up your time. She noted additional funding opportunities in the second and third years but they are all competitive. If you have the choice, it seems that taking funding somewhere that will allow you to focus and study, where there is solid support for travel and presentations, seems a more professionally sound choice.
