For those with funded Phd offers, do schools often provide some form of reimbursement for the huge cost of, say, moving across the country? My current job gave me a stipend to move to the current city in which I live, but they have money, which a lot of universities don't. Will they be mad if I ask? Of course, if you don't ask, you never get...

As far as UCLA is concerned (noticing your sig), fellowship funds are mailed out/direct deposited "several weeks" before Fall quarter begins, while the rest of the quarters have disbursements right around the same time the quarter starts. So basically, getting your fellowship a few weeks in advance is probably their idea of "relocation funds." I found that out while poking around on the grad school website. You could also query your department as to exactly when disbursements occur.

The only university that offered me relocation funds was UCLA, and I'm pretty sure I could have gotten some funding out of NYU too, if I tried hard enough. It wasn't very common among the offers I got, most offered summer funding if they wanted to offer something extra.

It can't hurt to ask, I brought it up and was granted some moving money (3k) since they couldn't up my stipend to a competing schools offer. Remember diplomacy is getting what you want while the idiot walks away from table still smiling.
