boston_creme Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 To all the MS and PhD students accepted at UCLA: Given that I as well as some other fellow students are not getting any information regarding the funding situation at UCLA, this is a good place to discuss what's happening in that regard. Feel free to update other applicants about what's happening if you contact anyone in the department, and good luck to all! Question: To the ones already with a MS degree and going for their PhD only, can you share your profiles? I'll start with mine: UG GPA: 3.82 (average state univ back east), GRE Q800 Vcrap (below 400) A 4.5, MS GPA 4.0 top10 US school, 2 internships, 2 yrs research experience.
cabuka Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Well I was admitted to MS in UCLA EE (altough my aim was phd). I emailed EE admissions coordinator and she replied back as: Financial awards have not yet been released. They are being finalized as I type. We expect all awards to be emailed in the next 3-5 days. All students will be notified once all financial awards are released. I received this message yesterday. Also do anyone has any idea whether they'll fund (at least partially) any MS students this year?
boston_creme Posted March 24, 2010 Author Posted March 24, 2010 Thanks for the information. I have no information regarding funding for MS students. My current adviser provided me with the following information just now: (from an automated email) The Department of Electrical Engineering, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and the Graduate Division will be closed March 24-26. We will re-open on Monday, March 29, 2010, at 8 am. If your email is concerning funding offers, they are being prepared and will be emailed as soon as they are available. Please understand that each offer has to be reviewed and approved by multiple individuals before it can be considered final. Only final offers are emailed to the students. Once all offers have been emailed to the recipients, we will email all admitted students.
Confused Goose Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 I got the financial (combination fellowship+GSR) offer mail yesterday, probably around 1pm Pacific time. I'll graduate with my master's in June. You can find my profile in the 2010 engineering applicants profile thread.

Confused Goose Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Cool congrats! Is that your top choice so far? Thanks! Not a top choice, but I'm having a very hard deciding between the offers which I have as of now.
ElecEng Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 The last I heard from the department was that we'd hear by noon on March 23rd, but I still haven't heard anything. UCLA is on spring break this week, so that may not help things.
boston_creme Posted March 26, 2010 Author Posted March 26, 2010 Looks like we're gonna have to wait until Monday.. anyone heard anything on Thursday and Friday?
phillipsarea Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 According to Mandy's auto-reply email, the funding packages will be released within next week, I was wondering whether they will award some of the M.S student with out-of-state tuition waive.

They mentioned during the open house that students have to get in state tuition first before they get any waiver, but I don't think that's set in stone. Thanks for the information
cabuka Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 guys so sorry about MS admits (including me) but I received an email from my initial advisor that this year financial aid is not possible for int'l MS students.
balac Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 guys so sorry about MS admits (including me) but I received an email from my initial advisor that this year financial aid is not possible for int'l MS students. Hm I guess that is somewhat correct 'cause according to my advisor it is possible but very hard to get. It is possible to get RA if you are planning to continue your studies as a phd and your advisor is interested in you. However if you haven't been contacted by anyone until now than it is probably impossible to get anything like this.

It's almost April 15!!! If anyone gets any piece of useful information, please share it with the rest of us.
ElecEng Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Mandy's email on the 29th said the following: "All departmental financial award notifications have been emailed to the award recipients. If you did not receive a financial award notification, you were not chosen for a departmental award. "
boston_creme Posted March 30, 2010 Author Posted March 30, 2010 Does anyone know how many PhD students they funded this year? (with an MS already)
schiezophrenic Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Hi All, To all those admitted to MS: How many of you are planning on going to UCLA finally ? And what are your Majors ? Also, does anyone of you know what is the procedure to get into the phD program after completing MS and what are the chances ? Thanks for Sharing... FYI: I have been admitted to the embedded systems track.
Steven Hwu Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Hi All, I received the UCLA Financial Offer Notification on 30th from Mandy, and I received a decision notification yesterday. Does anyone know where can I find the details of the financial offer. I just can't find it. Is that the ePAL (electronic provisional award letter)? In ePAL, it says my letter has not been generated. Does anyone have the same message as me? It has been Apr. I need to bring my wife and our new born baby, so my situation is more complicated. I become more and more anxious~~~. Thanks for your replying.
