From Yale's website, for phd:

 

"GRE scores for the General Test and for the Subject Test (usually in Mathematics, sometimes in the area of the undergraduate major) should accompany an application."

 

Does this mean that you are strictly required to have taken a subject test (for example in math, physics, CS)? Looking at the results section there seems to be people who were accepted previous years without taking the subject test.

A lot of people don't put in their MGRE score even if they took it (look at the math* results for example). Is that what you're referring to?

I would rather to use the NRC 2010 PhD program ranking. All Stanford/Berkeley professors I know recommend this. And as far as I see, it does seem to be more reasonable.
