GatorFan315 Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Good morning all, I was wondering if anyone had heard/knows anything about the Institute of World Politics. I applied almost on a whim, as I work in DC and wanted to stay here to go to school. Applied to Georgetown SSP and the IWP, got into both (I think). So far only have email acceptance from GTown, pending decision by Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew any good/bad rankings/stats for the IWP. Failing that, what are some good resources to look into this issue? By random web searching I have been unable to find much, which is somewhat worrisome. Any help is greatly appreciated.
sypher2k3 Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 I think it's a no brainer to go to Georgetown, even without funding. I applied to Georgetown, GW, Tufts, Hopkins this year as an undergrad (got into Georgetown SSP and GW Elliott), and I had been looking at the IWP program, until almost all of my professors told me it's not really a legitimate school. It makes no appearance in any rankings I have seen - not even top 20 or 30. And if you can get into a top 5 school like Georgetown, probably makes no sense to waste the chance for that kind of name recognition and those kinds of faculty to go get an M.A. at IWP.

I'm sure by now you have chosen and started classes. I would like to respond in case someone else reads this. I looked at a program at GW, but chose IWP. As with any small school, we have growing pains; however, we have scholar practitioners who have either worked in the business and now do consulting or are currently working in their related field. Our professors are published and bios can be found at IWP.edu. We have a partnership with the Army where instead of going to NDU, the officer can chose to attend IWP for two years to obtain a graduate degree. We have a lot of military officers and professionals in the National Security/International Affairs arena, i.e. State Department, DIA, DoD, CIA, Navy, Army, FBI, Dept. of Treasury, and various private contracting firms and diplomatic staff. I have classmates from all over the US and internationally. I have had/have classmates from Princeton, Univ of Florida, Univ of Buffalo, Penn State, UT, London School of Economics, Dickinson College, Baylor, TCU, and St. Mary's (that I can recall). I moved from Texas to attend classes. Our marketing department leaves something to be desired which is why you may not have found a lot in your searches. There are a list of events and news on the website. I would recommend anyone interested signing up for e-mail notices of upcoming events. I just went to a lecture at school Friday night given by the the Assistant Chief of Staff of the Army. Owen Smith, son-in-law of former CIA Director William Casey, is on our board and frequents events with his wife (Casey's daughter). We also have Career Services and in the short time I have been there, have had several recruitment events at school. i.e. Military Intel (Marines), CIA, Secret Service. I currently have friends and current classmates with internships at State, DIA, Heritage Foundation, and Diplomatic Security with several others already hired with the FBI. There are many more examples, but I cannot list everything. Please remember that professors may be biased because the field is competitive especially when it comes to recognition and publishing. Again, go to www.iwp.edu and get on the e-mail list for events. It will be eye opening and educational. We also have a lot of fun with tight networks because of our size. Thanks,

Thanks, I'm glad you posted this. I came across IWP's site once, and I was quite surprised by how well connected they are-- mostly because I had not heard of it. I think the difference between IWP and other programs is that IWP seems to be rooted almost completely in practice, which is a no-no in academia. The impressive faculty list at IWP is still a list of practitioners, and the curriculum, even where it does aim to teach philosophy and history, does so as an instrument of job training. Judging from the (somewhat strange) mission statement of the institution, I get the impression there's just a small ideological slant, too. So I'm very curious to know what you think of the actual classes in terms of quality, rigor, and theoretical depth.
