PartyEngineer Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 I contacted some faculty before applying for PhD in civil engineering and even had really nice phone calls with two of them. I am wondering is it a good idea to email the two professors I actually had a good connection with, either asking if I am still considered or when the decision will be made or just to reaffirm the interest? What is the best way to phrase my email? Thank you!
magnetite Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 I've considered doing the same thing, but I've read in a few spots around here that it might seem desperate to send an email when departments are evaluating applications. The general consensus has been to contact the department administrator to get an idea of when offers will be made. The benefit of this is that you could call and ask without giving your name, thus staying anonymous.
Ternwild Posted February 10, 2019 Posted February 10, 2019 @PartyEngineer@magnetite For both of you, Professors don't know anything about the admissions decision, unless they're on the committee. The most they can do is put in a good word for your application to the admissions committee. If you have questions about your application, you can often get an early notification by email the graduate admissions office to see if there is any word on your application. Most times, they will check on your status and tell you if you're rejected/waitlisted or of admissions aren't decided on, yet. What you can do with professors is start talking about what research is like in their lab and what research projects they're interested in starting with grad students.
