I have received 5 offers (all Ph.D in Applied MAthematics) and I'm particularly interested in two of them: AppMath@UT-Austin, Appmath@Carnegie Mellon。 It's really hard for me to make choice since these two institutions both have their own shining points. UT-Austin is stronger in the traditional branches of appled math such as scientific computing, numerical analysis, optimization, etc... CMU is stronger in financial math, discrete optimization and is more famous to people outside the acdemic. Both Pittsburgh and Austin are amazing cities.. Does anyone help me to make the decision? Thx very much!!

Have you visited any of the schools that accepted you?

Also, when you say "CMU ... is more famous to people outside the acdemic."

There is Shreve, but he is just a start in fin eng. So...

What is your background? What are your interests? Did you apply to ICES at Austin?

If you are interested in computational finance, go for CMU. If you are interested in computational sciences and engineering, go for UT Austin.

I applied to both ICES and the mathematics department of UT-Austin but the application result of the former hasn't come out.

Thanks. You mean in CMU only Shreve are doing well in financial math?

If you are interested in computational finance, I think CMU is a better place.

UT Austin is doing computational sciences more in areas of engineering and physics.
