FranklinG Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Hi all, I'm from the UK applying to some US schools so apologies for any ignorance of the system. I think I've learned that there's a general deadline of the 15th April for responding to offers (or is it for receiving an offer?), anyway, Columbia's application deadline for the MA course in English im applying to is the 15th - does anyone have any idea when i can expect a decision?! Anyone else in this very frustrating situation? There seems to be absolutely no indication on their website and they havent replied to my email.... One thing's for sure, it looks like the 15th will come and go and i'll still be waiting Thanks
A. Colin Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I know what you mean, FranklinG! I'm applying for an MA in East Asian Studies at NYU, and they also have an April 15th application deadline! I can only hope they mean it's rolling. But still, I've not heard a peep from them since I submitted my app. back in Dec. Meanwhile, the University of Illinois wants to know by April 15th if I plan to attend. So, I've no idea what to do. Can anyone give advice? Has anyone else been in a similar situation before?
FranklinG Posted March 29, 2010 Author Posted March 29, 2010 (edited) Surely we wont be hearing end of May time? That would be beyond terrible. What do you mean rolling? One thing I've been wondering is if they're making decisions pretty much as they receive applications and will have a good idea of who they'll be accepting by the 15th. Then we could hear quite soon after the 15th. If the first time they actually look at applications is the 15th, though, we're in trouble! Edited March 29, 2010 by FranklinG
A. Colin Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 End of May!? Oh man, I really hope not, but the pessimist in me is growing louder and stronger with each passing minute, hour, day, and week I don't hear from Admissions. Yargh! Sorry, I meant "rolling admissions". Basically, what you've described - they look at apps. as they come in. Effectively making it first come, first served. One can only hope. Am thinking of asking U of IL for an extension on my pending decision; just say I want to know all my options before pressing "go". We'll see whether or not they buy it...
FranklinG Posted March 29, 2010 Author Posted March 29, 2010 You know that if your offer doesnt include funding you can accept then pull out at any point? I'm sure you do, but anyway, I might as well say in case it solves your problem! Hopefully we'll hear soon.
A. Colin Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Yeah, I mean none of the programs to which I'm applying are likely to offer funding for an MA. I think most of the dough goes to the PhDs. Still, I just don't know if the whole accepting-and-then-declining-for-a-better-offer can be seen as burning some potentially fruitful bridges down the road. Maybe I'm stressing out for no good reason. I dunno... Either way, I'm rooting for the both of us to hear ASAP!

I searched the results log for when people heard for my course last year - there were entries in late April, May, late May (and even early June!!). Had a search for your course as well out of curiosity: http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=nyu+east+asian+studies Top one says May I'm afraid. Dont really get the second one.... Anyway, we shouldnt be getting out hopes up for a result anytime soon
A. Colin Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 June!? I mean, that's just cruel, esp. for an international applicant. To be expected to just hop across the Atlantic with that little turnaround time is too much. I'm so sorry! I'm so in your corner. Let me know to whom I can direct a nasty letter reprimanding them for their negligence! Thanks for sharing the results search! I'm crossing my fingers that these results are woefully incomplete, and that there really are folks who were accepted before early May. *sigh* I think I'll write the Department the week of April 15th in hopes they've made a decision. Good luck:D
