gsams Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Okay, so I signed up for a free trial. Friends of mine who read a lot swear by it. I read a lot, too and I like to keep books that I use for research. I often loan them out to colleagues or students I am tutoring who are writing papers. I have my own loaner library of canon works. However, shipping is ridiculous. Is it worth the $80.00 a year for the shipping? Do you find yourself buying a lot of books online?

You can sign up 4 other people onto your account to access the benefits, so I get them through my dad. If you are thinking about buying into it, it may be beneficial to go in on it with a few other people and split the costs. It is definitely worth it for the free 2 day shipping!
michigan girl Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 If you are the type of person who constantly buys books, the Amazon Prime membership is worth it. You will realize that the shipping fees add up to the annual membership.
joro Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 If you really must have that book within 2 days, then I'd say it is worth it. If you want to save money and don't mind waiting a few days more for your book to arrive via free shipping, then I probably wouldn't get it.
Postbib Yeshuist Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I love Amazon Prime, but I can't say it's strictly "necessary." The ability to have a book, or whatever else from the kabillions of things they have for sale, in two days (often one for me, since I live near a warehouse), is awesome. That being said, have I ordered anything in the past 3 years that I could not have waited 2-3 weeks for? Not too much. There have been maybe 3-4 cases where the two days saved my butt. The real beauty of Prime, imo, is hat you don't have to hit $25 for free shipping. Being able to buy an $11 book and just an $11 book has most certainly saved far more than the cost of the program. (PS It's great for emergency boxes of diapers when you run out unexpectedly )
ColorlessGreen Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 I had the free trial of Amazon Prime for a couple of months, but I decided not to get the paid membership at the end. Certainly, it was helpful in getting the one textbook I forgot to buy until three days before I needed it for class, but other than that, there was nothing I bought that I couldn't have waited longer for. I think in order to make it worthwhile, you would have to not only buy A LOT, but also need everything IMMEDIATELY, which simply is not the case for me. I'd say spend the $80 that Prime costs on the books you want instead, and just wait a little bit longer for them. Even Amazon's regular shipping speed is pretty fast, after all. And just think of how many books you could get with $80! (Of course, this is assuming you buy in bulk, instead of just getting one book at a time. I buy from Amazon less often, but I always make sure I hit the $25 mark when I do.)
