zerolife Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 probably will accept offer for the Information Security Policy & Management policy. Anyone else joing the program or Heinz School? Anyone also part of the 6% minority group of student coming from a liberal arts / social science background like me? If you are a current student or alumni, have you thought about a career abroad, like in East Asia?

Anyone also part of the 6% minority group of student coming from a liberal arts / social science background like me? If you are a current student or alumni, have you thought about a career abroad, like in East Asia? I'm 75% sure I'll be accepting my MSPPM offer from Carnegie Mellon's Heinz school. I just have to visit and have some more questions answered (I don't want to make the wrong decision). I'm thinking about technology policy but not quite sure yet; my background in poli sci doesn't seem to have prepared me for any intense computer science work. Have you visited campus, or are you attending their visit days?
tortoise Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Hey! I'm just about set on the Heinz MSPPM program. Legal-focused tech-dyed social science background here; tech policy future for me! What attracts you guys about tech policy? What kind of social science interests have you been pursuing? -jacob

What attracts you guys about tech policy? What kind of social science interests have you been pursuing? -jacob I like tech. policy as it relates to energy and emerging technologies. I took almost all the classes for an energy minor at my undergrad, and I've worked with energy policy in DC and I'd like to eventually do so full time. I'm not sure if I'll be able to really take the electives I'm thinking about, since I'm admitted to the DC-track program, but hopefully I can squeeze one or two in. Either way, Heinz's core curriculum is pretty well balanced, so that is definitely a draw for me. As far as social science things...for a long time I was thinking law school, so I've had all sorts of legal internships and whatnot, but then one policy internship switched my interests for good. What are your long term goals after Heinz?
zerolife Posted March 22, 2010 Author Posted March 22, 2010 @Juli I probably won't get a chance to visit the campus till end of May and by then, it would be too late to regret choosing CMU so I'm planning to just go there August. I highly doubt I will regret choosing CMU anyway. However, please let us know your experience from your campus visit ... I'm very interested. Also, I don't think you need to worry too much about your lack of CS background, especially since you are taking a program from the Public Policy School. Lol I think I should be worried since my program falls under the Information Systems School. @tortoise My current work is related to internet investigation where I discovered my interest in international cyber crime enforcement & policy, especially in regard to China since I always wanted to do some China related work.
tortoise Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 My long term goals haha! First I've got a near-term goal: suppress certain paranoia that has developed over the past several years, at those times that it is unreasonable. For instance, zerolife mentions China - which is relevant to my interests - and the alarm bells start screaming. lol As I opened my SOPs, I have spent the past three years at YouTube, defining policies and ensuring legal compliance, watching our site change the world for the better, and fighting every day to protect it from those who would see that capacity for change destroyed. This work has been extremely gratifying, and extremely frustrating. We have helped many, many people, and every day run into the limits of what we can do within existing legal frameworks, and fail to help many more. I want to go beyond working within this matrix. I want to fix it. I have a pretty good sense of what I want to accomplish, and a pretty poor understanding of how and where I might best do it. Advising legislators in DC? Back in the non-profit sector? Back in the private sector? lobbying? *shudder* or maybe lobbying 2.0? *doubleshudder* lol Somewhere in the executive? Fluke or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHmFekhcnmU? Or just same-old smokescreens? I've got some cynicism issues to work through as well That's about as much as I can say at this point.
schiezophrenic Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Hello Everyone !! Congratulations to all of you who have been admitted to CMU. I thought of starting a thread for CIT so we all can get to know each other and post any questions we may have. I have been admitted for the computer engineering MS program at the ECE dept. Most probably I will be going with CMU. So, any of you guys have accepted CMU's offer ? Waiting for your participation... Cheers

Althrough I was hoping for a full ride, it seems based on my research that the $18000 a year I got isn't that bad. The next best gave me no funding at all
schiezophrenic Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Funny..I started a new thread for CIT but its disappeared and my post got shifted to this thread on its own.I wonder what happened. Anyways, anyone joining ECE at Carnegie Mellon here on gradcafe ? Cheers
barryca Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 I will be attending CMU for a MS in ECE next semester Congrats to everybody who got accepted!
Ziad Ewais Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 CONGRATS!! to you all attending CMU this year, I'll be going to the School of Architecture, MS in Computational Design. I can't find anyone else going there, even to the SoARCH. Asking about accommodation, if anyone has any experience with the region and the prices please reply. Cheers to all!!
grendel Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 PhD in Mathematics (MCS). Anybody got any clever ideas about housing? I don't know whether I should go for a quick trip in May or June or just arrive a week or two in advance. I live in Europe so I'd rather not waste any money travelling!

Cheers to all!! as far as I know, Pittsburgh is pretty cheap ... around $500 a month should get you a nice room in a shared apartment. However, you are looking at someone living in DC talking so your definition of cheap might be different. CMU has a housing registry system for grad student. You can get a temporary account by following the below instruction (got it from admissions office) First time access and you DO NOT have a Carnegie Mellon email address: 1). Go to http://pr.housingregistry.us/cmu/. 2). List all information requested. Starting date is first day on campus. 3). Students: List your department/college and advisor. If advisor is unknown, list your admission counselor. 4). Wait for email approval, which may take 1-2 days. 5). Go to http://www.housing.cmu.edu/communityhousing/ and select “Search for a Listing in the Housing Registry” to access the listings. Personally, I haven't started looking yet. Feels like it's too early yet.
