HAPLESS BOY Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Hi everyone, I am trying to decide between UCSD and UT.. I am interested in rf circuits and/or applied electromagnetics... Any comment would be appreciated! Thank you very much..
Slorg Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 UT Austin strikes me as much richer than UCSD. Which professors are you interested in at each school? (I go to UCSD, and I've also worked for a professor who is now at UT Austin.)
HAPLESS BOY Posted April 4, 2010 Author Posted April 4, 2010 Thank you for your response!.. I am planning to work with Prof. Buckwalter, Prof. Rebeiz or Prof. Larson at UCSD. At UT, I would have Prof. Hassibi or Prof. Gharpurey. I would appreciate any comments on these groups if you know them.
Slorg Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Have you visited either school or met/contacted any of those professors yet? My two cents: Buckwalter is a relatively young professor and I think (but I could easily be wrong) that he might have relatively little funding. Larson, in class at least, is very nice. When people ask questions he always says "great question" or something like that. He does it so much in fact, that it strikes me as insincere sometimes. I know Buckwalter and Larson are friends; they've gone jogging together for years. I've run with both of them before. Rebeiz, I don't know much about, but I don't think he's bad. And I don't know those UT Austin professors.
Magician944 Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 I currently go to UT Austin and like it, but there doesn't really seem to be a TON in terms of RF circuits. One of the big professors is Ranjit Gharpurey who is supposed to be quire good. I took a class from him, and to be completely honest, he is not that great of a lecturer. I'm not sure how he would fair as an adviser however. We also did just get a new professor in from Italy, Andre Alu in electromagnetics. I don't know too much about him other than some of the stuff he works on is "cloaking" which is pretty cool. Also, since he is new, he might be looking for a students. Good luck!
