I've narrowed down my grad school decision to TULANE U (in Neuroscience) and TEMPLE MED SCHL (in Biomedical Neuroscience) but I just can't seem to figure out which one's better. In my perspective, they both have the same amount of pros and cons, even if not similar! Which is why I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!

Q: WHICH ONE IS BETTER in your opinion/experience? WHY?

Thanks in advance for your help

Choosing a school will depend on your research interests, JMHO. Just listing the pros and cons might not be enough. You might want to weigh them against each other and see which one you can live with and which one is not negotiable.

Good Luck!

Do you see yourself more likely to live in the North or South when you are done? I don't know much about Temple but Tulane has a good rep all through the South.

Hi,

Here is my honest opinion: Unless you are very sure you need a degree in Neuroscience, don't go to either. Unfortunately the job market for life science PhD graduates is saturated with overqualified individuals from top-notch PhD programs. I'm sure both temple and tulane have decent programs, but unless they are at the very top of their fields, it's going to be very hard to ever find an academic science job.

If on the other hand your eventual goal is to work in industry, you may be able to get a job coming from one of these departments. You will still face a lot of competition from graduates of higher-ranked schools. Temple, because of its proximity to the PHiladelphia pharmaceutical cluster is probably a safer bet for industry networking.

Really, unless you desperately need a PhD(or can't get a job), I'd strongly advise you against attending any lower ranked school. Not that excellent students can't come out of these schools, but you'll be working against significant odds to establish yourself in the scientific community.

Try again next year, or apply for the potentially more lucrative master's degree. A master-level job in the biotech industry is a lot safer than a PhD.

salud.

I would take Tulane just so I wouldn't have to live in the Temple area. I've heard is very bad- crime-ridden, unsafe, unpleasant, etc. If they both have good programs there is no reason to live in the ghetto if you don't have to. wink.gif
