Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

Universities are primary gateways for successful careers and provide unmatched education for those who embark on the journey of a degree. By having students take courses outside of their field of study, this will take up valuable time that could be used for students to learn and perfect their desired career paths.

While the claim may hold true to people who agree with well-rounded people in society, I on the other hand disagree with this claim for a number of reasons. With multiple subjects juggled at once, this may diminish that students’ performance caused by time consuming courses that have little to nothing to do with their field of study. Moreover, with fewer classes that are tailored to the students’ desired field of study, student’s will be able to focus primarily on their subject at hand and excel. By having students excel at their respective classes in field of study, universities will have a higher success rate of students graduating and exceeding in their career paths, which in turn displays higher success rates in society.

The claim that universities should require every student to take different courses outside their field of study holds merit in that the graduating class will bring a sense of well roundedness to society in which people are not narrowly scoped in certain subjects. However, having the student take classes that are not associated with their field of study will take away time that they could use to hone in on their craft.
