Hi everyone!

I am not sure the prestige of statistics program in Canada (like U of T, Waterloo, UBC, McGill these top 4). Especially, when someone graduates from these four statistics program with PhD degree, will he/she be competitive to have a faculty position in the US? Assuming he/she has an average or higher level for publication and decent recommendation letter.

If you have a strong publication record and strong letters, this should not be an issue. For example, Yves Atchades (a professor at University of Michigan for awhile before recently moving to BU) has a PhD from University of Montreal.

You may need to do a postdoc, but even the majority of graduates from the top programs in the U.S. (who pursue academic careers) end up doing postdocs these days.

Our old guru cyberwulf said Toronto and UBC were about equivalent to US schools like Cornell, Minnesota, UCLA.  McGill, UdeM (for French speakers only), and Waterloo are probably in a tier just below this and would be equivalent to US schools in the 30-45 range.

Seriously, though, there are many excellent faculty at the top Canadian programs. The reason they produce comparatively few US faculty is that there are few American students in these programs, and Canadians and other international students mostly stay north of the border upon graduation.

Yeah, I have been told that many students who graduate from top program tend to stay in Canada to be a professor.
