This may not be the right forum, but this seems to have the most active users. I'm applying to programs in biostat/computational biology, some of which ask for a personal statement for diversity(e.g. Stanford). I figured most of these programs would be merit based and thus wouldnt care if I didnt write the statement (considering they are optional). Is this the correct interpretation? Also, I dont really add much in the conventional sense of diversity.

If you don't have anything particularly notable to write, and it's optional, it's probably not worth your time to draft one.
