Venkatmr99 Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 I tried searching for this scholarship in this forum, but couldn't find it... I apologize if this is a repeat. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here knows anything about the Gates-Cambridge scholarship? I was interested in applying... Was hoping to build a conversation group. Where do I start?
Hetty Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 Gates: to apply, you apply to Cambridge and fill out the Gates-specific portion of the application. That's all you have to do, but you need to make sure your application is in by the Gates deadline (may be as early as October!) Then you wait. You either get an interview or you don't.

Any idea on when/where these interviews take place? Any particular format (i.e., how you work in group situations, one-on-one, panel-on-one, etc.)?
Hetty Posted April 11, 2010 Posted April 11, 2010 An easy little bit of internet research produces this: http://www.gatesscholar.org/about/default.asp?ItemID=11
olafpebble Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I plan on applying for this in the Fall as well. I've done a bit of research, and it looks like interviews are held in the a few US locations (for US applicants) and for everyone else they're held in Cambridge at the school. If you live too far away, they are also willing to do the interview over the phone.
Hetty Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Yes and yes. It's a great scholarship and a fabulous university; I'd definitely encourage you to apply. That said, it's also incredibly competitive. There are about 80-90 scholarships awarded each year, out of the thousands of international graduate applicants, so please don't count on getting it. Cambridge has other funding sources (CISS, Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, Cambridge Overseas Trust) and if you tick the right boxes on the application and get it in by the deadline you will be considered for those as well, but they're also extremely competitive. Cambridge does not guarantee any funding for any of its accepted students, and it's not a great economic climate right now.
