  1. On the topic of declined fellowships being equivalent to listing schools you rejected, do list them if you won something extraordinary. For example, I won the UTF (standard Toronto grant) but then I also won the Chancellor Jackman Scholarship for the Humanities (a nice exclusive little topup.) So I put that on my CV even though I turned down Toronto for a better-for-me place, because the Jackman is extra and above.

    PhD Tuition

This is true for the US, but not true for the UK. Full funding (tuition + stipend) for doctoral degrees is the norm in North America. It is NOT the norm in the UK. Your university may have scholarships or funding that is available for you, but the UK universities do not offer guaranteeed funding in the same way that US ones do, and it is quite common to be offered admission without any funding at all; it is also common to self-fund at least part of your PhD studies. While I would encourage you to continue to seek funding, it is not guaranteed and the lack of complete funding is not the rejection that it would be in the States.
  3. Yes and yes. It's a great scholarship and a fabulous university; I'd definitely encourage you to apply. That said, it's also incredibly competitive. There are about 80-90 scholarships awarded each year, out of the thousands of international graduate applicants, so please don't count on getting it. Cambridge has other funding sources (CISS, Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, Cambridge Overseas Trust) and if you tick the right boxes on the application and get it in by the deadline you will be considered for those as well, but they're also extremely competitive. Cambridge does not guarantee any funding for any of its accepted students, and it's not a great economic climate right now.

    "studentship"

Based on the description provided, it will definitely cover home/EU fees but will NOT cover the international portion of tuition (so you're still responsible for that half.) I would definitely clarify if that includes a stipend; usually studentships do, but there's no guarantee. Congrats as well on the studentship; like player23 says, they're hard to get!
  5. I was told to read my supervisor's newest. Big surprise! On the other hand, it's a very useful book.
  6. An easy little bit of internet research produces this: http://www.gatesscholar.org/about/default.asp?ItemID=11
  7. Gates: to apply, you apply to Cambridge and fill out the Gates-specific portion of the application. That's all you have to do, but you need to make sure your application is in by the Gates deadline (may be as early as October!) Then you wait. You either get an interview or you don't.
