Chances with 3.1

Question

Hi everyone,

I'm set to graduate in 2020 from a mid-range large public school with a major in chemical engineering. I'm really interested in research, and would like to eventually get a PhD in chemical or biomedical engineering. My main aim is to work in pharmaceuticals R&D, perhaps in drug development.

The issue is, I've always really struggled with academics in general. I believe I'm smart at understanding the material, but bad at test-taking or studying for tests in general. My grades are mostly Bs, with a few C and my GPA is at a 3.1. The Cs are mostly in organic chemistry, something I've struggled with especially.

I have some research experience, and will have a paper and a poster by the time I graduate. I also interned at a small biotech company summer after my junior year, and am the research lead for Chem-E-Car at my school.

To make up for my GPA, I was going to work for a year or so. I'd really appreciate any advice on what range of schools I can apply to, should I apply to grad schools at all? Do I have a chance at top 10 BME schools at all? Will they take into account that I have a really difficult major?  I really do love research and think I'd do a good job but my grades are causing me a lot of anxiety and stress. Over the years, I've tried multiple ways to do better and things have improved slightly, but its caused me a lot of anxiety, stress and has not been great for my mental health.
