midcentury Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) Does anyone know: is an interview necessary for admission to Chicago, or is there a possibility of getting in without one (i.e. if I know someone who got an interview request and I didn’t, is it all over for me)? Their website says, “In some years, a few of the final candidates for PhD admissions spots may have a brief, exploratory Skype interview with departmental faculty members,” which sounds to me like not all admitted students will be interviewed, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking. What's your sub-discipline? I happen to know that, as of Wednesday, the ancient specialists who are *not* on the admissions committee have *not* received writing samples for review. This is just to say that, if whoever you know is in a different sub-discipline than you, then they could be at a different stage in the process.

Not ancient – I’m actually not sure who’d be reading my sample, because it sort of spans two subfields (ethics and phil of lang), but a good reminder that I don’t really know what’s happening and that it definitely will not help my nerves to try to guess.
philapplicant2020 Posted February 2, 2020 Posted February 2, 2020 Does anyone know the sub-discipline of anyone who has already been admitted/received an interview?

HootyHoo Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 I know someone into phil of lang who just got admitted this past week, but she's also into Kant and epistemology; no idea what angle she took in her SoP or what her writing sample was on, so I have no idea which sub-discipline would have been reviewing her. Good luck!
